ERVN LEVI BATES, OF OAKDALE, NEBRASKA.
GATE-GPENER.
Application led April 14, 1917.
To all whom t may concern.'
i Be it known that I, Ervin LEVI Barns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakdale, in the county of Antelope, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Gate-Opener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a gate opening mechanism, and has for its object character which embodies novel features of construction whereby a gate can be opened by the occupant of an approaching vehicle and subsequently closed after passing through the gate opening without the necessity of dismounting from the vehicle.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a gate opening mechanism which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily manipulated, and which is dependable in its action and not liable to get out oferepair.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
F or a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate opening mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the bearing supporting sleeves.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference numerals 1 designate a pair of spaced standards which are arranged upon one side of the roadway and have the upper ends thereof bifurcated to provide for the pivotal mounting of the operating levers 2. rlhe gate itself may be of any suitable construction, although in the present instance it is shown as formed with upright i Speccaton of Letters Patent.

end bars 3 connected attheir middle points by a horizontal rail 4, the extremities of the end bars being connected by horizontal rods 5 and diagonal braces 6. 1f desired, woven wire netting may be stretched upon the gate.
The end bar 3 at the pivot end of the gate is rigidly secured to the middle portion of a horizontal bar 7 which is arranged at right angles to the plane of the gate and journaled between the two standards 1 so as to turn about a horizontal axis. Inthe present instance the extremities of `the. horizontal bar 7 are shown as terminating in trunnions 7 a which are journaled within suitable bearings S upon sleeves 9 which are'fitted upon the respective standards 1 and firmly secured thereto at the proper elevation. These sleeves 9 may be conveniently formed of sheet metal, and are provided at their lower ends with integral laterally projecting Vsleeves 10 which receive and position the extremities of a horizontal strut member 11 which is arranged between the standards 1 and below the pivot bar 7. This horizontal strut 11 may be secured to the positioning sleeves 10 and standards 1, and serves to hold the standards 1 properly spaced from each other. A horizontal tie rod 12 is ar ranged under the strut 11 and connects the standards 1, extending through the latter and having the ends thereof threaded to receive nuts 13 which bear against large washer members 14e. lt will thus be obvious that the. strut 11 and tie rod 12 coperate with each other to hold the standards 1 at exactly the proper distance apart, since the strut prevents the standards from coming together, while the tie rod prevents the standards from spreading apart.
Horizontally disposed diagonal braces 15 extend between the pivot bar 7 and the central rail 4f of the gate in order to hold the gate rigidly in proper position and prevent lateral swinging thereof. ,secured to this horizontal rail lof the gate at a point suitably spaced from the pivot bar 7 are the laterally projecting arms 16 which terminate in balls 16a upon which socket members 1Gb are loosely fitted. The socket members 1Gb are connected by coil springs 21 to cables 17 which extend downwardly from the inner ends of the operating levers The outer and longer ends of the operating levers 2 extend in opposite directions along the side of the road and have suitable cables or handles 1S applied thereto. A person approaching the gate from either direction will pull downwardly upon the handle 18 of the cor-V responding operating lever 2 and thereby cause the gate to be swung over on the opposite side of the standards 1. The resiliency of the springsQl will adinit of the gate being easily swung beyond a dead center whenV sides being flared, as indicated at 2OEL for the vto swing downwardly into a closed position.
purpose `of directing the gate into the space between the sides when the gate is permitted Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Iletters l'atent, is
1. A device of the character described, in-
Y cluding a pair of spaced standards, sleeves slidably mounted upon the respective standards and provided with corresponding bearings, means for securing the sleeves in anadjusted position, a horizontal strutextending between thek standards, positioning sleeves carried by and projecting laterally Uoples of this patent may be obtained for frein the before inentionedsleeves, said positioning sleeves receiving the ends of the horizontal strut, a horizontal bar extending between the standards and having its ends ]ournaled within the bearings of the sleeves,
a gate having one end thereof rigid with the Y horizontal bar and niounted to swing upwardly in a vertical plane with the axis of the horizontal bar as a center, operating levers pivotally mounted` upon the upper portions of the standards, andl cable connections between the operating levers and the gate.
2. A device of the character described, iiicluding a pair of spaced standards, a gate pivotally mounted between the standards to swing upwardly in a vertical plane about a horizontal aXis, operating levers pivotally mounted upon the upper ends of the standards, arms projecting laterally froni the sides of the gate and terininatingin balls, sockets loosely applied to the balls, and cable connections between the sockets and the opf erating levers.
In testiinony whereof I have signed iny naine to this'specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
