UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. BAILEY, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MASSAGE APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 718,594, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed May 5, 1902. Serial No. 106,094. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Massage Apparatus, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the produc tion of an improved apparatus formassage and also for strengthening the muscles and exercising.
Myimprovedapparatusconsists, essentially, of a flexible support surrounded by a series of rolling surfaces shaped to adapt the apparatus to any part of the human body, said surfaces rolling independently when the apparatus is moved over the body.
Preferably the exterior of the rolling surfaces will be covered with a flexible surface.
Figure 1 represents my massage apparatus in use in one position, and Fig. 2 shows an enlarged view, partly in section and broken out to illustrate more clearly the construction of the apparatus.
The apparatus consists, essentially,of aflexible support a, which will preferably be a strong cord or rope, preferably braided and dressed to prevent the textile surface of the cord from Wearing rapidly, or preferably the cord may be inclosed in a coiled spring a The support is shown as extended through two like handles 1), and the ends of the supports at the outer ends of the handle are secured in position in the handle by means of a screw 0, and by removing the screw the support may be readily renewed in case of wear.
Between the handles the support is surrounded by a series of cylindrical surfaces d, preferably of wood and represented as surrounded externally by a flexible surface 6, composed of india-rubber, having projecting therefrom a series of hollow bosses 6'. These surfaces (1 are so shaped, as represented by the conically-formed ends, that the flexible support may be bent freely, that it may be Wrapped over any part of the body, and that when so wrapped the apparatus may be moved to and froand the supports will roll over the body, such action being one of the approved forms of massage treatment.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An apparatus of the class described, comprising a flexible support, handles secured directly to the opposite ends of said support, a series of cylindrical surfaces revolubly mounted upon said support between the said handles, said cylindrical surfaces having reduced ends which contact with each other and permit the apparatus to accommodate itself to the shape of the body as said surfaces are rolled over the body upon said support, and a wear-protecting covering for said support interposed between it and the cylindrical surface.
2. A massage apparatus comprising afiexi ble support, a series of surfaces revoluble about the support, and a spiral spring surrounding said support and sustaining said surfaces as the position of the apparatus is changed on the body. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. BAILEY.
