TO ALL- WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: t y
Be it known that I, PAUL DECIIAUSE, citizen of France, now residing at No. 894 Broadway, in the city of New York, in the county and Sta-te of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Easels; andv I do hereby declare that the following is` a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will Yenable those 'skilled in the `art to make and use the same, reference beingfhad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawingi Figure 1 represents an easel made according to my invention, in the ,act of being extended and adjusted in position upon uneven ground. l A
vFigure 2 is a vertical or longitudinal section from front to rear, taken when lthe easel is folded up;
Figure 3 is a cross-section, taken on the line x '11, iig. 2, the easel being partly opened out.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is, among other things, to produce an easel for artists, or for other purposes, which can be securely and safely placed on uneven ground, and also adjusted to varying heights to suit the frame or picture, or the stature of the person "using the easel.
The easel is represented in iig. 1 in the act of being `adjusted upon uneven ground. i '.lhe legs a wa are each made extensible by sliding extensions' b b, which are connected to the legs by straps i It., one of which is fastened to the legs a, and the other to the extension-pieces b. The extension-pieces are secured in the desired relations to the legs, more or less extended, by set-screws z'. In order to secure the easel whenl extended, and to give it steadiness or firmness, I provide a toggle-joint, c e, which, when fully extended,acts as a brace to those legs to which it is directly connected, and prevents them from col'laps'ing'or coming together. The parts e c' ofA the toggle are hinged'by their outer ends to two of the legs e a, whilevtheir inner Vends are hinged to each other. Their hinged ends are provided with a. tongue, j, which is fitted in a longitudinal groove made in theback of the re'st c of the easel, as is clearly show in gs. 2 and 3. When 'the said legs a dare brought together, thevtoggle folds up and its tongue j slides upwards towards the top o f the groove,as is represented in 5g. 2. When the legs are diste'nded, the tongue slides down towards the bottom of' the groove, and allows the toggle to take a horizontal position, in which position it acts as a brace'to the said legs. Fig. 1 represents the toggle partly drawn down to its `proper horizontal position. The legs a a a arevhinged at Z l l to the head c of the easel. The rest d e which supports the picture is made extensible by connecting the parts d e to each other with avtongue and groove, as is shown in the cross-section, iig. 3, thefront part, d, being movable on the part e, and the latter being iixed permanently to the head k.. The lowerend of the movable part d is provided with an inmnovablev clamp, f, which is secured in place by a setserew,.and its upper end has a clamp, i
g, which is movable and adjustable vertically on the face ot' the rest, The set-screw that fastens the lower clamp also fastens the sliding part d of th rest tothe fixed parte. The top ,ofclampfand the bottom of clamp g have fingers m, whichr serve to hold the frame or picture upon the easel, and prevent it from becoming displaced on the rest. i f i What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is Y 1. The extensible legs, consisting of the hinged legs a and their extension sliding parts b, made and arranged substantially as described.
i 2. I also claim the combination of the legs with the toggle-brace c c,substantially as described.
3. I also claim the extensiblerest, composed of the fixed part e and the sliding part d, in combination with the fixed and movable clamps fg, Vsubstantially as described. i 4 Y A I PAUL DECHAUSE. Witnesses:
W. Hanse, Gno. F. SOUTHERN.
