SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,421, dated January 13, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DUDLEY BRISKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milltown, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Truss-Pad, of which the following is a speci fication.
Myinvention relates to certain improvementsin the construction of truss-padsfor the treatment of inguinal hernia, and has for its principal object to construct a pad which will exercise a drawing pressure on the part to which it is applied and which will more effectually close and surround the opening than the pads in common use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the truss-pad constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the pad on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same on the line 4 4c of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar View on the line '5 5 of Fig.2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The pad is formed, as usual, of rubber and comprises in general a base portion 10, having a protuberance 11. The base tapers in thickness from end to end, the thickest end 12 beingwhen applied the end nearest the groin.
The approximately centrally disposed protuberance is shaped in accordance with the side of the body to which it is to be applied, the pad illustrated in the drawings being designed for application to the left side. The base of the protuberance merges into the surface of the base in a gradually-curved line, and its highest point is nearest the thicker end 12 of the base, the highest end portion being arranged, as indicated at 14, on a substantially circular line, which merges into a vertical end wall 15, extending from the curved line on which the protuberance is joined to the upper surface of the base. Viewed in transverse cross-section, as indicated in Fig. 4, the lowest edge 16 of the base is thicker than the upper edge, and the central longitudinal axis of the protuberance is slightly above the similar line of the base. Both the upper and the lower walls of the protuberance are extended on curved lines to the merging lines of the upper surface of the base; but it will be noted that the inclination of the lower wall 17 is much more abrupt than that of the upper wall 18, the latter being extended in a manner somewhat similar to the The contour of the pad is such that it will effectually close and surround the wound and form a perfect support for the intestines without injury to the patient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A truss-pad formed of an integral piece of hollow rubber and comprising a base of gradually-increasing thickness from its upper and outer edges to its lower and inner edges, the thinner edge portions being substantially solid and the thicker edge portions being hollow, there being an approximately centrally disposed protuberance gradually merging into the surface of the base at a distance from the outer edge thereof, the thickest or highest portion of such protuberance being adjacent to the thickest edge of the base and thence tapering on a gradually-curved line to its merging-point with said base near the thinner edge of the" latter, the'upper and the longitudinal surfaces of the protuberance in the direction of the thinner edge portions being gradually inclined, while those surfaces extending toward the thicker edges of the base are substantially abrupt.
