SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,038, dated January 6, 1903. Application iiled September 2, 1902- Serial No. 121,798. (No modal.)

To all whom t may con/cern:

Be it known that I, MILTON V. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazle- Kentncky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester- Reels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains -to make and use the same. i

This invention relates to improvement-s in folding harvester-reels, the object being to provide a device of this character which when not in use may be quickly, easily, and compactly folded into a small space and readily unfolded again for use, a further object being to produce such a device which shall be simple in construction, durable in use, inexpensive, and well adapted to the use for which it is designed.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of the reel,show ing the parts unfolded or in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts folded. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the reel with the parts unfolded. Fig. 4 is a side View of the same with the parts folded; and Fig. 5 is a detail transverse sectional View through the shaft, hub, and inner ends of the arms, showing the position of the parts as in Fig. 1.

In the drawings, l denotes the ordinary reelshaft of a harvester, which may be supported by and geared upto the machine in the ordinary manner. l

2 denotes the folding-reel, comprising a central hub consisting of the circular plates 3, fixed upon the end of the shaft l and held together and spaced apart by means of a rivet 4, passing through asleeve 5, located between the plates 3, as shown.

6 denotes the radially-disposed'arms of the reel, which are hinged together at their inner ends, the said inner ends being adapted to lie between the plates 3 when the reel is in an unfolded or opened position, one of saidarms 6a, being rigidly connected to the plates by means of a rivet or bolt being passed there- .through and through the arm. wood, in the county of Ballard and State ofA l 7 denotes a at metal ring concentrically disposed around the hub and adapted to pass through an elongated slot 8, formed in each arm 6, the arm 6a having a rigid connection with the ring 7, whereby said ring is held in `concentric relation to the hub.

9 denotes a series of apertures formed around the ring 7 equidistant apart, and l0 denotes apertures formed in the arms 6, which when the reel is unfolded are adapted to register with the openings 9 in the ring 7, and 12 denotes spring-actuated detents carried by the arms 6 and which are adapted to engage the holes 10 in the arms 6, and when said holes are brought into alinement with the holes 9 in the ring the detent 12 will 4spring into said holes 9 and securely lock the arms 6 to the ring 7.

13 denotes the cross bars or blades of the reel, each of which is provided midway its ends with a metal strap or ferrule 14, having a depending lug or ear which is adapted to engage a slot formed in the end of each of the arms 6 and to be pivoted thereto by a pin or bolt 15, thereby allowing the blades 13 to be folded up against the arms 6.

16 denotes segmental-shaped metal braces connected at their ends to the blades on either side of the center `thereof and adapted to pass through a slot in the arms 6. The segments 16 are each provided with a centrallydisposed aperture 17, which when the blades are unfolded Vor opened will register with openings 1S, formed in the arms 6.

19 denotes spring-actuated detents connected to the arms 6 and are adapted to engage the openings 18, formed therein, and when the blades are opened the engaging end of the detent will spring into the opening 17, formed in the segmental braces, thereby securely locking the blades in their open or unfolded position.

The reel may be provided with any desired number of movable arms 6, arranged on each side of the fixed arm 6a, thetwo arms adjacent to the said fixed arm being hinged thereto and each consecutive arm being hinged to 4the one before it, except the last two, which are not connected together, thereby allowing IOO the hinged arms to fold up on each side of the fixed arm, as shown in Fig. Lof the drawings.

In order to fold the reel, the spring-detents 19 are released from engagement with the segments 16, and the blades are then folded down alongside the arms 6. The detents l2 are now released from engagement with the openings inthe ring 7, and the arms 6 are folded together and up against the fixed arm 6a.

When the parts are in their folded position, the harvester may be moved over rough roads Without danger of racking the reel and often breaking the parts. Also when so folded the reel occupies comparatively small space, thereby saving storage room in the barn. Furthermore, a reel constructed as described requires considerablyless material than is used on reels of the ordinary construction.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made Without departing from the principle or sacrilicing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a harvester-reel the combination with a hub, an arm fixed to said hub, movable arms hinged to said fixed arm and to each other, a supporting-ring rigidly connected to said fixed arm and passing through said movable arms,

means for locking said movable arms to said ring, cross bars or blades pivotally connected to the outer ends of the arms, segmental braces fixed to said blades and adapted to be locked to said arms to hold said blades in an operative position and means for locking said segmental braces to said arms, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a harvester-reel the combination with a supporting hub and ring, of an arm fixed to said hub and ring, movable arms hinged to each side of said fixed arm and to each other and adapted to move on said supporting-ring to fold together, spring-actuated detents for locking said arms to said ring, cross bars or blades pivotally connected to the outer ends of said arms, segmental braces Xed to said blades to hold the same at right angles to the arms, and adapted to be moved in an arc of a circle through a slot in said arms to fold said blades alongse said arms, and springactuated detents for locking said segmental braces to said arms, when the blades are at right angles thereto, substantially as shown and described.
