WILLIS E. MANN, OF ALLENVILLE, ILLINOIS.
H ARVESTER-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,692, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed November 5, 1902. Serial No. 130,177. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, WILLISE. MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of. Allenville, in the county of Moultrie and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and use-. v
ful Invention in Harvester-Reels; and I declare the following tube a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the reel extended or with the reel-arms unfolded. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View of the hub c. Fig. 3 is an end view of the hub shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. l with the reel-arm contracted or folded. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail end View of hub o with collar removed. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7, Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a detail end View of the collar c. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the hub and reel. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the ring and hub. Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the disk.
The invention relates to folding harvesterreels; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the driving-shaft.
1) represents a central hollow reel-shaft,
which receives the driving-shaft a in its hollow portion, and the two are secured together by means of a pin 75, usually provided with a spring connection, this hub and the hollow reel-shaft being also secured to the drivingshaft by said pin. This reel-shaft is detachable andds designed to be arranged to fit any binder. The reel-hubs c c, rigidly fixed upon said shaft 1), are similar, except that one hub c is usually made a little longer than the other. The hub is provided with short lugarms g, which extend radially therefrom for the attachment of the reel arms or stays f, which are double, each consisting of two parts, which are pivoted one on each side of the lug-arm g by means of the pivot-bolt or.
To one side of each hub atits outer portion is bolted a peripheral abutment-ring (Z by means of bolts 91., which are seated in perforations in the lug-arms. The outside of the ring is flush with the ends of the lug-arms, and the ring is also provided with arc-form bracing-lugs d, which project around the hub between the stays or arms of the reel when unfolded for use in order to hold them firmly in a bracing manner. 'On the other side of the hub c is placed on the shaft a movable locking and bracing disk 6, which is held in position by means of a collar h, which is secured on the shaft by means of apin or key or other suitable device. This disk is provided with sector-form lugs 19, which are radially arranged and are separated from each other by an interval g, which is a little greater than the thickness of the doublebranched stay, which is designed to pass through this interval when the reel is folded. Vhen unfolded to position for use, the stay is turned outward against the abutmentring and is locked in position by means of a lug s on one side of the sector-shaped lug p, which when the disk 6 is rotated at little comes into position, engaging the stay. By
the same locking-lo g s when the reel is folded each stay is locked in folded position by turning the disk to bring the lug over the same. The disk is held in looking position by means of a spring bolt or pin 15, which is seated in bearings of one of the sector-lugs p and engages a perforation in the hub. Then the reel is to be folded or unfolded, the disk must be moved sufficiently to allow the stays to pass through the narrower portion or throat of the interval between the sector-lugs p. The outer hill) 0', or hub which is farthest from the binder, need not be provided with a lnovablelockiug-disk,but should haveasmall bracing collar or disk attached to the outside of the hub, as indicated atyv.
The horizontal bars 10 of the reel are designed to be pivoted to the ends of the staybars f between the branches thereof,as shown, such stay-barsf having thus a parallel movement in folding and unfolding. In this man.- ner it is designed to provide for harvesters a strong folding reel which can be readily folded or unfolded and can be secured in either position by the same locking device.
I-Iaving described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a harvester-reel, the central shaft, the hubs rigidly fixed upon said shaft, the folding stays pivoted to said hubs, and rotary means for locking said stays in both folded and unfolded positions, substantially as specified.
2. In a harvester-reel, the central shaft, the hubs upon said shaft, the folding stays pivoted to said hubs, each said hub having on one side thereof an abutment-ring for the stays, and one of said hubs having on the other side thereof rotary means for locking the stays in position, substantially as specified.
3. In a harvester-reel, the central shaft, the hubs, upon said shaft, the folding stays pivoted to said hubs, one of said hubs having an abutment-ring for the stays and arc-form bracing-lugs, and rotary means for locking the stays in both folded and unfolded positions, substantially as specified.
.4. In aharvesterreel, the combination with hub and disk, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
