Be it known that LJosEPH H. TRAVIS, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York,

in the county of New Yorkand,` State of New- York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining-Chairs, of which the following is a full and complete specilication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it apperiains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide a reclining-chair with an improved foot-rest; and with this and other objects in viewthe invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.V

In the drawings forming part of this speci iication, in which the separate parts of my i improvement are designated by the same refthe chair and showing a pivoted catch con-` nected therewith. i V

In the drawings forming part of this specication I have shown in Fig. l a recliningchair comprising a main rectangular frame composed of bottom side pieces 1, front and rear transverse pieces 2, and leg-pieces 3, in which the side and front pieces are tenoned in the usual or any well-known manner, and said leg-pieces extend upward above the seat of the chair to form supports for the armpieces 4, and the space between the front and rear legs at each side and between the arms 4 and the side pieces 1 are filled in with spindies 5 in the usual manner. The chair is also preferably provided `with a hinged back, which is adjustable to any desired position, and any preferred means may =be employed for eecting this adjustment. The adjustable back, however, forms no part of this invention and any Suitable means may be emjoined at their rear ends by a cross-bar 17,

and the forward portions thereof are formed separately, as shown at 18, said separate portions 18 bei-ng hinged to the parts 15, as shown.

The foot-rest 16 is composed of a single board 2l, to the top of which is secured acushion 22, provided with a central fold-seam 23, which operates as a hinge and by means of which the rear portion of said cushion may ,be lifted up when said foot-rest is swung into the working position, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to permit of the securing of the foot-rest in said position, which is accomplished by means of a fastening device 24, which is pivoted to the front part 2 of the main frame of -the chair andone end of which is adapted to enter a cavity 25 in the foot-rest board 21, said .cavity being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

It will be observed that the bars 15 form simply a sliding support for the foot-rest proper and that the board 21 of the foot-rest proper is secured to the parts 1S, which are hinged to the bars 15, this connection being made in any desired manner.

Instead of using the form of foot-rest shown in Figs. l and 2 I may employ that shown'in Figs. 4 and 5, which comprises a box or receptacle 26, provided with a cover 27, one part 27a of which is hinged to the other at 27", and a cushion 22 is placed overthe` said cover 27, and the outer end of said box isfprovided with a catch 28, adapted to engage with a knob or other device 2S?, secured to the hinged portion of said cover for holding said hinged portion of the cover in a closed position, and said box or receptacle 26 may serve as a storage or receptacle for papers or various articles. In this form of construction the foot-rest supports are the same as herein- AIOO before described, the bars or supports being employed and the parts 18 being hinged thereto,as in Fig. 2. The catch or locking device 24 also operates in the same manner, the end of theboX or receptacle 26 below the catch 28 being provided with the slot or recess 25 to receive the same.

As will be seen upon an examination of the drawings and from the foregoing description,when the foot-rest 16 is released from the operating position by turning the button or catch 24; the forward end of said footrest may be swung downwardly into the sides between the bars 15 or into the frame formed by said bars and the cross-bar 17, which will bring the end pieces or hingepieces 1S into line with the axis of the side bars 15, and when in such position the entire foot-rest and supports thereof may be slid back beneath the seat of the chair in the slides or ways formed by the angular pieces 13, and said foot-rest may be again drawn out for use whenever necessary and may be swung into the position shown in Fig. l and lockedin such position, as will be readily understood, and this operation may be repeated whenever necessary.

In the operation of the button or catch 2E the rear portion of the cushion 22 must be raised and the front part of the seat-cushion of the chair may also be raised, if necessary.

My invention is not limited to the form of the main body portion of the chair nor to the adjustable back, as these parts form no part of my said invention and are only shown and described herein for the purpose of showing the application of myimproved foot-rest to a reclining-chair.

Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A chair, the bottom of which is provided thereunder with parallel slideways, a slideframe mounted in said slideways and adapted to move baokwardly beneath the seat of the chair, or to be moved outwardly in front thereof, the front end portion of said slideframe being formed separately and being hinged to the rear portion thereof, and a legrest rigidly connected with the hinged portion of said slide-frame and adapted to be turned forwardly and backwardly, a locking device pivoted to the seat portion of the chair and adapted to engage the leg-rest so as to hold it in this position, said leg-rest being also adapt ed to be folded downwardly and backwardly, in which position the upper side thereof is lnsh with the bottom of said slideframe, said parts, in this position,`being adapted to be moved back beneath the seat of the chair, substantially as shown and described.
