ACCOUNT-REGISTER AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,909, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed February 24, 1902. Serial No. 951193. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, CONRAD PAUL and JAMES E. HANKEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Account-Registers and Desks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin account-registers and desks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a desk with several series of slides carrying projecting lugs having numerals or characters thereon and to provide a displayrack having a large number of cards bearing corresponding numerals or characters, together with the name of the purchaser.
The present invention has for its still further object the provision of novel means whereby accounts may be easily kept by re tail merchants; furthermore, to provide a device that may be attractive in its appearance and one wherein the accounts may be easily referred to. l
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and one wherein new accounts may be easily opened with purchasers and accurately recorded.
Our present invention further contemplates to construct a series of slides that will clamp a large number of sheets of paper whereupon the accounts may be recorded, said slides when extended serving as a substantial base for making the charge or memorandum.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of-this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved account-register and desk. Fig. 2 is a top position when desired.
i plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the slides. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the desk.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents a suitable base or support which may be placed upon the table, counter, or other suitable support. Upon this base 1, formed integral therewith, is a rectangular casing 2, which may be provided with drawers 3 and 4. Upon this casing 2, and formed integral therewith, is secured a desk 5, the lower portion of which has formed therein a number of partitions 6, having a series ofgrooves or guideways '7 formed therein to receive the slides 8, said slides 8 carrying upturned flanges 9, which serve as securing means for the recording-pad 10. These slides 8 also carry projecting lugs 11, upon which are placed numerals or characters 12. These projecting lugs 11 when the slides are placed in proper position are staggered, as shown in Figs. 1 and'2 of the drawings, in order that the numerals or characters may be easily read. Furthermore, these lugs are arranged in a staggered relation to one another for the purpose of providing a handhold in order that they may be readily placed in the extended The desk 5 is preferably provided with a top 14, which extends rearwardly slightly at an elevated angle and has secured at its rear end the vertically-arranged display-rack 15, said rack carrying a series of guide-strips 16 to receive the cards 17, and in front of the guide-strips and cards is secured a glass or other transparent plate 18, this plate being secured in position by means of the rotatable hooks 19 and 20 and further held in position from lateral displacement by means of the forwardly-extending side strips 21 of the desk.
The manner of operating our improved register is as follows: The names of all the purchasers are placed upon the cards in the display-rack together with a number of cards corresponding with the number of cards on one of the lugs of the slides. We will presume A. Dunn makes a purchase. The clerk will look at the display-rack and find the number, which in this case, for the purpose of illustration, is No. 1. The clerk or employee will then operate the slide 1 to the extended position and record the charge or credit upon A. Dunns account. The names may be arranged alphabetically upon the display-rack, if desired, and the numbers or characters may be used for the purpose of successfully carrying out our invention.
The many other advantages obtained by the use of our improved device will be readilyapparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw- IHQS.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an account-register and desk, the combination with a desk and a display-rack secured to and extending above the said desk, of a plurality of slides arranged in said desk, said slides carrying suitable indicating characters arranged in a staggered relation to one another, a series of guide-strips secured to the said display-rack and cards arranged between the saidguide-strips, said cards bearing characters corresponding to the characters carried by the said slides, substantially as described.
2. In an account-register and desk, the combination with a desk, a display-rack secured to and extending above the said desk, and forwardly-extending strips secured to the opposite ends of the said rack, of a plurality of slides arranged in said desk, said slides carrying suitable indicating characters arranged in a staggered relation to one another, a series of parallel guide-strips secured to the said display-rack, cards arranged between the said guide-strips, said cards bearing characters corresponding to the characters carried by the said slides, a transparent plate arranged in front of said cards, between the said end strips of the display-rack, and rotatable hooks engaging the upper and lower edges of the said plate for securing the same in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
