TELEPHONE-DIRECTORY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Application filed March 11, 1910. Serial No. 548,629.
T 0 all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, Il ALLAoE G. FRnNoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in TelephoneDirectories, of which the following is a specific-ation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device to be attached to a telephone transmitter or the stand therefor, and which shall contain memorandum cards or sheets upon which can be inscribed names and telephone numbers, by which these numbers can be readily ascertained; and which by serving as an advertising device, can be profitably sold at a low price.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my improved device applied to a telephone transmitter stand; Fig. 2 is a front view of the card frame detached; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the tube; Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 47-4: of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a front view and Fig. 6 an edge view of a memorandum card.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the stand of a telephone transmitter 2. Around said stand is clamped, by a screw 3, a'strong metal strap 4:, which is extended to form, as shown at 5, the main portion of a support for the telephone directory. From about the middle of said portion 5 extends at right angles thereto a round rod or shaft 6, which extends about half way into a tube 7. Said tube has secured thereon at the outer end a milled disk 8, by which it can be turned upon said rod as a shaft. Also secured upon said tube near its ends are somewhat larger disks 9, each formed upon its inner face with a circular series of recesses 10, to receive the reduced ends 11 of metallic clips 12, which are clamped upon adjacent corners of a memorandum card 13. Said cards can readily be removed from between said disks by bending them slightly, whereupon the reduced ends of the clips can be withdrawn from the recesses for the same. Also secured upon said tube, midway between the disks 9, is a smaller disk 15 which supports the inner edges of the cards at the middle. The metal strap 4 is bent at right angles or parallel with the shaft 6 at the end as shown at 16, and is then bent inward a short distance, as shown at 17 and upon its end are formed notches 18 adapted to engage the outer edges of the cards in their upper position. In their lower position, the outer edges of the cards are supported upon a rod 19 extending parallel with the shaft 6 from the lower portion of the support 5. The outer terminal portion 20 of said rod is bent back at right angles, and is also formed with notches 21.
The cards are preferably ruled on one side as shown at 23 to enable the user to write the names and telephone numbers of persons with whom he most frequently communicates and are alphabetically indexed on said sides. The other side is preferably used for advertisements, as shown at 24, so that the device can be made a source of profit to the manufacturer although soldat a low price or even given away. The outer end of the tube is open for the insertion therein of a pencil 25 for the convenience of the user.
I claim In combination with a support provided with means for securing it to a stand or the like, upper and lower parallel members secured at one end to said support, the other ends of said members being free, a shaft rigidly secured at one end to said support and extending substantially parallel with said upper and lower members, the other end of said shaft being free, a tube rotatably and removably mounted on said shaft, disks secured upon said tube, each having a circular series of recesses, memorandum cards and metallic clips secured upon adj acent corners of said cards and having reduced ends in said recesses, substantially as described. a
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALLACE G. FRENCH.
Witnesses I FRANCIS W. WRIGHT, D. B. RICHARDS.
