4 Claims.
This invention has reference to -books,,and more especially a book-for use as a personal directory of telephone numbera'although 'a book according to the invention may be employed fo other memorandumpurposes,
It is the object of the presentinvention toproanature that inthe out-of-use condition of-the book, for example when it is lying flat on a table or shelf, the back covers will lie so' close together as to enclose and obscure from view the said vide an-improved book which will stand on a I desk, table or shelf with the hinged edges of its covers and leaves uppermost, and such that when opened, the front cover and the opened leaves will be supported at an inclination to the vertical, upwardly and rearwardly from the hinge of its covers and leaves.
In a book according to the invention the front cover is supported, when the two stiff back covers with which the book is provided are splayed. apart, and the book is standing in the display position on a supporting surface with its hinge constituting an extension thereof, the surface of the said cover supporting member being then inclined rearwardly away from the vertical so that the front cover and the opened leaves supported by said member will lie in a position convenient for reading the matter, e. g., telephone numbers, appearing on the respective exposed leaf, and also for writing on said leaf.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. 1 illustrates a book according to one em bodiment of the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side or end elevation of the book shown in Fig. 1 with some of its leaves upturned, the view showing the manner in which a book embodying the invention will stand on a table or shelf without other support.
means, so that in its fully closed'up condition thebook will present a neat and compact appearance, and a' pilerof the books will occupy a minimum of packing or storage space. Conveniently and as shown a'thin flexible strip or tape 1 is glued or otherwise secured at its ends to the respective covers at positions remote from the free lower edges of the said covers and operates to limit the splay thereof.
The front cover I may be of such size as to cover completely the leaves 2 when the book is closed, but preferably it is such as to leave the bottom edge regions of the leaves exposed as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom marginal portions of the various leaves are cut away, as also seen in Fig. 1, to the extent requisite to expose indices printed at 8 on the respective leaves.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the inner back cover 3 has a broad upwardly extending tongue-like portion 9 against which the front cover l rests when the book is opened, such leaves as may be upturned, when the book is opened, being, in turn supported by the front cover. Two serpentine wire hinging members 5 are provided, the portion 9 lying intermediate them in the length of the top edge of the book. l0 indicates the surface on which the V book is standing.
Referring to the drawing, the book according bers 5 engaged in perforations 6 in the leaves and covers, which will permit the book to open flat. The back covers are adapted to be splayed apart as shown to enable the book to stand with the free lower edges of the back covers resting on a desk, table or shelf, and these covers have associated with them splay limiting means of such As will be appreciated, by spreading the back covers 3 and 4, the book, with its hinge edge uppermost, can stand without other support on the surface H] of a desk, table or shelf in a manner convenient for raising the leaves for reference.
provide a rest for the upturned front cover and l an upturned leaf or leaves, such upturned or opened leaf or leaves lying in a position convenient for reading the data thereon or for writing on the respective exposed leaf or leaves.
Usually for a book of a size suitable for .use as a personal telephone directory, a single support for the front cover and opened leaves will be found sufficient, but if desired a plurality of such supports may be provided on the inner back cover of the book.
What I claim is:
1. A book comprising in combination stiff front, inner back and outer back covers, leaves between said front and inner back covers, hinging means extending over part only of the length of the top edges of the covers and leaves and securing the same together, a broad stiff tongue-like member constituting an extension of the inner back cover and projecting from the hinge edge of the book at a location free of hinging means, and a thin flexible member between and'secured to the back covers remote from the free lower edges thereof for limiting the extent to which said covers will be splayed apart when the book stands with the lower edges of said back covers resting on a supporting surface, the said tongue-like member, when the book is in a standing position with the front cover upturned operating to support the latter and any upturned leaves of the'book lying I thereagainst in a rearwardly inclined position.
2. A book as claimed in claim 1 having the hinging means along the top edge of the book di vided into two sections disposed respectively in the opposite end regions of said top edge of the ook with the t ng le1.lke member disposed inmedia e s id sections. a
ook s c m d in la m 1 having nd x markin s on portions of its leaves depending be low the lower ed e of the front cover when the 1 book is closed but standing in its display posi tion, the leaves having portions cut away in-order to expose the succession of indices on the said leaves.
4. A book comprising a front cover, an inner back cover, an outer back cover, all said covers being formed of stiff material, leaves between said front and inner back covers, means hingedly securing said covers and leaves together at the opposite end regions of their top edges and permitting the back covers to be splayed apart to enable the book to stand with the free lower edges of said back covers resting on a supporting surface, a tape between and secured to said back covers remote from the lower edges thereof for limiting the splay of such covers, a tongue-like f v standing position of the book, and when the front cover has been raised to its open position, to
supportsuch front cover with any opened leaves of the book lying thereagainst in a rearwardly inclined position, and index markings on portions of the leaves depending below the bottom edge of the front coverwhen the book is closed, other portions of the leaves being cut away in order to expose to view the indices-onthe respective leaves in that condition of theboo'k;
