F. H. JOHNSTON INDEX CARD SUPPORT Filed Nov. 19, 1919 Patented July 21 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK H. JOHNSTON, OFCHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .ASSIG-IiI'OIR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, 'IO ACME CARD SYSTEM COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
IN DEX-CARD SUPPORT.
To all whom it ma concern.
Be it known that FRANK H. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing inthe city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of Illinois, have invented certain new 1 and useful Improvements in Index-Card Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in card indexes and refers more particularly to an index card support which is hinged to the top of the index card holder and furnishes a firm writing support or convenient reading support when the cards are upturned with their reverse" sides available for entry or investigation.
It has among its salient objects to provide a card support which is hinged at the top ofthe card holder and lies flat with the cards when in a closed position; to provide a sheet-metal writing or reading support when in an open position and one that will furnish a firm writing support and a convenient reading support for index cards when the cards are turned to have their reverse sides available for entry or inspecti0n; to provide a support which is small,
at the same time, light and strong, one which is not cumbersome to manipulate in connection with the cards, a support which will withstand the weight of the hand and arm when entries are being made on the card; to provide a support which is attractive in appearance, easily detached and cheap of con; struction and in general to provide a construction of the character referred to.
tit)
In the drawings:
Fig; 1 is a plan View of the holder with support shown in an open and'closed position with a portion of the holder broken away.
i Fig. 2 is an edge view of the holder shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail of the hinged support. 1
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail showing means of fastening the support in holder channels.
Fig. 5'. is a detail of construction of the pivot rods upon which the support is hinged.
Referring in detail "to the drawings, the index card holder 1 is adapted to be pivoted to a suitable stand (not shown) by means of pivot rods 2. Lateral channels 3 serve to hold the flexible wire hangers 4:. in posito in overlapping relation by means of hinge clips 6.
The support member 7 is hinged to the lateral channels 3 by means of short'pivot rods 8. These pivot rods are grooved on their periphery as shown at 7*, and are insorted into the rolled portion of the support shown at 7*. The rolled portion 7 of the support is indented slightly in a transverse manner as shown at 7 c immediately adjacent the groove in the pivot rod 8. The grooving of the pivot rod and indentation of the rolled portion of the support allows the support to turn upon the rod but prevents the rod from sliding from the support when the support is removed from the holder. The
as tion for suspending the index cards 5 therepivot rods 8 are shaped at their outer ends to form the shoes 8 These shoes fit under the lateral channels and hold the support in place. I
. The support is bent at a predetermined stand out from the top of the holder at a convenient angle.
The support member may be made of any suitable substance that will serve as a desirable writing rest, such as sheet steel or the like; material that can be made light of construction and at the same time strong and durable.
Leaves 5' are intended to rest on the support7 when turnedup so that printed matter carried by the reverse faces thereof can be read and notations made thereon.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flat channeled frame member, of a plurality of card hangers slidably mounted in said channel portions, a card carried by each holder'and a reading and writing card supportat the upper end of the frame and adapted to support the cards when the latter are in reversed .position, comprising a plate member and slidable pivotal connections between the plate of flexible card hangers mounted therein, a card carried by each hanger and a readin and writing card support at the upper end of the frame to support the cards when the latter are in reversed position, comprising a pivotally mounted plate member adapted to lie normally flat upon the face of the cards or to be swung to the support portion. 3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member,of a plurality of card hangers mounted therein, a card carried by each hanger and a hinged reading and writing support at the upper end of the frame and normally lying fiat over the face of the cards and adapted to support the cards when the latter are in reversed position.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member, of a plurality of card hangers mounted therein, a card carried by each hanger and a movable support at the upper end'of the frame adapted to lie normally fiat upon the face of the cards and to support the cards in a convenient position for making entries thereon when the latter are in reversed position, comprising a" flat plate member having an offset portion at its lower end adapted to rest against the frame member and pivotal connections between said offset portion and the frame member.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of flexible card hangers set in channels on'said frame, index cards supported by said hangers, a writing support pivoted on said frame adapted to lie flat on the face of the cards or be swung to supporting position.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of a flexible card hanger set in lateral channels on said frame, a card supported by said hanger, a writing support member pivoted on, said frame and adapted when swung to a support position to hold the reversed card in a convenient position for making entries thereon.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with aframe, of flexible card hangers held by the frame, cards hinged on said hangers, a writing-support hinged on the frame and adapted to sup port the reversed cards at a convenient entering position when swung to .a support positlon and to lie flat on the face of the cards when in an inoperative position.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member, of a plurality of card hangers mounted therein, a card carried by each hanger and a hinged reading and writing support at one end of the frame, adapted to support the cards when the latter are in reversed position. l I
