'ro ALL WHOM 1T MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, JMES M. CROGKETT, of Newbel'n, of the ccunty'ot` Pulaski, and Stute of Virginia., have.
invented a new and useful iMode of Ventilating Chimneys to dwelling and other houses called the Chimney- Ventilator endl do hereby declarel the following to be a. full and exact descriptionthereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, und to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a. part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and construction of the box, damper, lid, and pipe, for the purpose of furnishing an air-passage from the nearest point outside of the house, to a. point imme- ..diately `in front of the iir'e, by means of the pipe passing from said point outside of the house, and under the hearth, and then connecting witha receiving and ,distributing-box, that passes upward through the hearth at the point in front of the fire.
This invention prevents all chimneys from smoking, that would otherwise do so from want of sufficient ventilation, and else relieves the room from all unpleasant droughts of cold air, and unpleasant sounds produced b v the air passing through the doors andwindows, and alsogreatly facilita-tes the -kindling of the fire, as well as the warming of the room. i
Figure 1 represents a front view of the ventilator.
Figure 2 a side elevation.
The receiving and distributing-box A, as shown on the dra-wing, projects an inch above the hearth, and on the front towards the fire-place contains a number of apertures, B B, proportionate to its length, and is supplied with u damper, C, regulating the supply of air that may be found necessary. The said box A should be about four inches wide hytwelve inches long, and should pass three inches cr more below the top of the hearth, so as to receive the pipe D, which is about two and a. half inches in diameter, and located one inch above the bottom of the box. The box A is covered with a suitable lid, E, which may be removed at pleasure forcleansing. The pip-e D is made in sections, so thatits length muy be readily adapted to the required distance,'and the end on the outside of the house is provided with n. wire-screen cap, G, to prevent it from being choked. The box A andpipeD should be made of cast iron. The lid E of thebo'x A may be made level with the hearth, instead of being elevated, and in that case the vents und demper-may be placed in the lid. H is a line :to repre- -sent the top of the hearth. J is a line representing the bottom of the hearth. The hearth is supposed to bel made of brick three inches thick. K represents the grate of the fireplace.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The arrangement and construction of the box A, damper C, lid E, and pipe D, when combined as herein described and for the purposes set forth.
