Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. MAXFIELD, OF MAYSVILLE, (HARLAN P. o., INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VE NTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,317, dated October 17, 1876; application filed September 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WM. HENRY MAXFIELD, of Maysville, (Harlan P. 0.,) in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilator, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a cross-section of my improved ventilator, taken through the line to :r, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved ventilator, designed especially for kitchens or cook-rooms to carry off the steamodors and foul air, but which may be used in other places with great advantage.
The invention consists in an improved ventilator, formed of the collar, the box provided with the flanges and the collar, the springcatches, and the grate provided with the lever, constructed and combined with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the collar, which is set in a hole in the ceiling or wall of the room to be ventilated, and is secured by screws to the lath or other timbers. The lower part of the collar A overlaps the ceiling or wall, and is made to represent a molding. B is a box, which fits into the collar A, and has spring-catches O attached to its sides in such positions that when the box B'is pushed into the collar A they will catch upon'the upper edge of the said collar, and support the said box in place. The ends of the spring-catches 0 project through holes into the interior of the box B, so that they can be drawn in to allow the said box to be removed. The lower edge of the box B has a flange, 1), formed around it to fit into a rabbet formed in the collar A. The top of the box B is arched, and in its center is formed a hole, which is provided with a collar, b to receive a pipe leading to the chimney-flue, and which should be of such a size as to form a draft sufficient to carry off the steam, foul air, 85c. Upon the lower edge of the sides of the box B are formed inwardly-projecting flanges b to support the grate D. The grate D is formed of two sets of parallel slots, placed the one above the other, and so arranged that the upper set may be slid over the spaces between the bars of the lower set to close, or partially close, the said spaces. The bars are kept in their proper relative positions by cross-bars attached to them, and the upper set is moved by a lever, d, pivoted to the central bar of the upper setand to a cross-bar attached to the lower set, as shown in Figs-l and 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- An improved ventilator, formed of the collar
