This invention relates to a new and improved damper for stove-pipes, by which the damper, when fully closed will admit of' suiiieient draft to cause the gases to be carried up the pipe, thereby preventing the escape ofthe gases into the compartment in which the stove is placed, the slight draft allowing but an extremely slow combustion of' the fuel in the stove. The damper when open admits of a good draft, sufficienti y so as to cause a proper combustion of the fuel without allowing the leat to escape up through the pipe into the The invention consists in using, in connection with a damper, a fia-ring or bell-shaped A plate or base fitted within the stove-pipe at any desired point and having the damper placed over the orifice or opening of said plate or base, the axis ofthe damper being a short distance above the orifice, as hereinafter fully set forth.
A represents the bell-shaped plate or base, constructed of cast-iron, and tted in the stovepipe with its flaring side downward, the lower end of' the plate or base being in contact with` the pipe, so that the opening in the upper and smaller end of the base affords the only drai'tcommunication through the base. On the npper end of the base A there are at opposite points two bearings, a a, in which a shaft, B, is fitted, and on which a circular damper, (l, is placed, the diameter ofwhich is a little greater than that of the opening in the upper end of the base A. The shaft B passes through the stove-pipe and has a thumb-piece, D, on one end ofit, by which the damper may be turned.
Vhen the damper is in a horizontal positi n it is closed, but as the bearin gs a a are a trifle above the upper edge of' the base, a space will be allowed between the damper and the base sufficient to afford sufficient draft to cause the gases to escape up through the pipe, but not sufcicnt to admit ot' a rapid combustion of' the fuel. When the damper is turned in a vertical position, it is open and a requisite draft is obtained. The base A serves to prevent the heat from passing up the stove-pipe into the flue, and in that respect alone itis a great improvement over the ordinary dam per.
Havingr thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The damper C, in combination with a base or plate, A, of flaring or other form, so as to have an opening for the damper of' smaller diameter than the latter, and the base or plate fittedsnugly in the stove-pipe with the damper a short distance above its orifice or opening', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
