Description

E. MINGYAYV.
Stove. No. 42,144. Patented March 29, 1864 With asses:
N Pnsns. Fhnmlilhograplur. wmm oooo c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD MINGAY, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO LEMUEL M. LEONARD,
, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,144, dated March 29, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD MINGAY, a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved air-conduit and valve, for smokedischarge pipes of stoves, furnaces, 850.; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whichv Figure is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of it.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved arrangement, of an air-conduit, a valve and its seat, and the opening thereof, with respectto one another and a smoke-discharge flue or pipe, the object of my invention being to enable air to be supplied to the smoke-pipe without at the same time creating any diminution of the passage for the escape of smoke.
In my arrangement the valve seatand opening are horizontal, while the smoke-pipe is vertical, or about so, and, furthermore, the valve-seat is wholly outside of the smoke-passage and on the bottom of a chamber or conduit, which projects from the smoke-pipe and opens into it.
In the drawings A, is the smoke pipe or a pertion thereof, B being the conduit, having the valve-scat a at its bottom, and the valve 1) arranged over such seat, and an opening, g, surrounded by the seat. The said valve is projected from a shaft, 0, which extends through the sides of the conduit B, and is provided at-onc end with an arm, d, to which a catch-lever, e, is jointed. A small toothed rack, f is cast or fixed on the outside of the conduit, as shown in Fig. 2. The catch-lever steps into this rack, and with it serves to maintain the valve open or raised to any desirable extent.
In the construction of an air valve and opening with a stove-pipe in the manner as patented by John Magee on the 20tl1day of May, A. D. 1856, the valve, on being opened, closes the smoke-passage more or less-that is to say, the more the valve is opened to increase the admission of air to the pipe the more will the passage of smoke through the pipe be interrupted but with my improved arrangement the passage of the smoke is not interrupted by the valve however much it may be opened. With my arrangement there is little or no danger of the smoke being kept back in the stove or fire-place, so as to be ejected therefrom into the room or apartmentin which such stove or fire-place may be situated. Furthermore, with my arrangement there is no danger of the smoke being driven into and through the valve-opening.
, I claim- My improved arrangement of air-valve I), seat at, opening g, and conduit B, together and with respect to a smoke-pipe, A, or fine, and so as to operate therewith substantially as described.
EDWARD MINGAY.
