SAM GOLDFADEN, OF BROOKLYN, -NEW YORK.
CIGARETTE OR GlGAR BOX.
SPECIFICATION formin part of LettersPatent No. 716,705, dated December as, 1902.
Application filed July 23, 19b2- Serial 110- 116,639- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM GOLDFADEN, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette or Cigar Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes for containing cigarettes or cigars, the object being to provide a box so constructed that after being emptied or partly emptied cigarettes or cigars cannot be replaced therein, thus not only protecting the purchaser from buying inferior goods or goods other than those indicated by the box-label, but also protecting the manufacturer from false representations of goods contained in the box.
I will describe a cigarette or cigar box embodying myinvention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cigarettebox embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of a box of modified construction.
Referring to the drawings, 5 desighates a cigarette-box made of metal or other suitable material and in two sections designed to be secured together by solder or otherwise after placing the original goods therein. At its outlet end the box is provided with a cover 6. The protecting device consists of springfingers 7. These may be formed by stamping. or cutting them out from one side of the box. The upper ends of the fingers extend nearly to the outlet of the box, and the said upper ends are here shown as enlarged, so there will be no danger of tearing the cigarettewrappers, as might be the case with narrow ends.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a narrower box, which will contain the same number of cigarettes as the box shown in Fig. 1. In this instance, however, the'spring-fingers are formed in the opposite walls, the fingers of one wall alternating with the fingers of the other wall.
When originally placing cigarettes in the cigarette-box, the two sections of the box will be separated and the spring-fingers will be forced back whenv placing the sections together. The sections are then to be soldered or otherwise secured. Upon removing a cigarette the fingers thatengage therewith will spring transversely of the box, as indicated in Fig. 2,thus preventing the replacing of a cigar, (lac.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cigarette or cigar box, a series of independent yielding fingers movable transversely of the outlet of the box, and enlarged heads on the free ends of the fingers.
2. A cigarette box consisting of metal, spring-fingers formed in a side wall of the box, and enlarged heads on the free ends of said fingers, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAM GOLDFADEN.
