IMPROVEMENT IN REGULATING WATCHES.

TO ALL WHOMv IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, HIRAM TODD, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Mode of Regulating Watches; and I do hereby declaro that the following is a full'and exact description of the sanne.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the regulator of a watch with a screw, E, and plate A, with sliding nut, B, with link, C, and nut G, attached to bar of regulator H by a pin, L, and to the movement of the watch, (Figure 1,) by screw M and steady-pin. To move the regulator of the watch, turn the screw E, which, by the expansion and contraction of the link C from heat and cold, will move the regulator, and will more perfectly regulate the time of the watch. g
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will'proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Myregulator is composed of five (5) parts, as represented in the accompanying drawing by the letters A, B, G, E, G, and H. The whole regulator, when put together, is represented in the sume drawing by lig. 1, as attached to the watch. The said five parts represented in the drawing, as aforesaid, are described and designated as follows:
First, the regulator H is like the regulator of a common watch, with a small pin in the bar, as represented by letter L.
Second, the plate, letteBA, is three-eighths of one inch in length, and one-eighth in width, turned up at both ends, .letters D D, onefsiX-teenth of an inch, with a hole in each end, the size of screw E, and the thickness of No. 23 by gauge. v v
Third, the screw, letter E, is one-'half an inch in length, the size of No. 9 in watchmakers screw-plate, with a head in one end, and nut, letter G, on the other, to hold it to its place. i
Fourth, the sliding nut, letter B, is three-sixteenths ofen inch in length, and one-eighth square, with a hole through its-centre, the size to fit the screw, letter E, which passes through it, pointed at one end, with slot sawed in the other, and with a small pin-hole through it.'
Fifth, the link, letter C, is one-half inch in length, and the thickness of slot in sliding nut, letter B, with a hole through one end, the size of hole in sliding nut, letter B, with a pin which fastens `them together and ,forms ajoint. The link, letter C, has two holes in the other end, the size of pin in bar, letter L, so that it may be changed from one hole to the other, which ,will give the regulator-bar, letter H, morcinotion, if desired, by turning the screw, letter E, and thus more perfectly to regulate the time of the watch.
Sixth, to put the improved regulator together, pass the screw E into one of the holes of plate A, then screw it through sliding nut B, and through the hole in the end of plate A, and put on the nut G which holds them together. Put the link C into the slot of nut B, and pin them together. Place the plate A on to the movement of'the watch, with hole slipped on to pin L in bar H of the link, and make it fast with a steady-pin and screw M, as represented by fig. 1 in drawing, which completes the improved reculator ready for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, js-
1. I claim the combination of the screw E, sliding nut B, link C, and the regulator-bar H, as shownv and described for the purpose specified.
:2. I claim the employment of the expansion and contraction of the link C, in combination with nut B and regulator-bar H, constructed to act upon the hair-spring of the watch and more perfectly regulate the same, as set forth.
HIRAM TODD.
