WILLIAM H. BEECI-IING, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
STEM-HOLDING CAP FOR BOTTLES OR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 716,619, dated December 23, 1902. Application filed August 30,1902. Serial No. 121,667. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BEECHING, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stem-Holding Gaps for Bottles or Cans, of wvhich the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of caps and stoppers that have attached to them stems or shafts for holding brushes, swabs, spoons, or spatulas; and it consists in the peculiar manner of connecting the stem to the cap, the object being to make a firm, durable, and inexpensive device. This object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing a cap-stopper and stem attached. Fig. 2 is a plan of the part that is inside of the cap proper. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the interior part. Fig. 4 is a cross vertical section of the cap-stopper.
In the drawings, A A, Figs. 1 and 2, represent a thin metallic cap, the part A being formed so as to constitute a screw-thread, as shown. Within the cap A A a block of wood B B is secured. The parts B and B are bored, as at D, for the purpose of receiving the end of the stem 0 for the brush part E.
The block B fits accurately into the upper part of the cap and is held therein by the compression of the walls of the cap in form ing the screw-threads thereon. (See Fig. 4.)
This block B besides serving as a stem-holder serves as a gasket between the top of the neck of the bottle and the interior top of the cap to make a fluid-tight joint.
The stem 0 may have at its end a brush or dauber of some absorbent material, or it may be in the form of a spoon or spatula, as may be desired.
It is essential that the part A A shall be of metal or some impervious material.
The great advantage of this closure device is that it furnishes a cheap means of applying the contents of the package, and at the same time the contents of the bottle or can will not soak through the cap and make it objectionable forhandling,&c. It also preserves the contents of the bottle or can much longer and better.
I claim- A closure device for bottles, comprising: a screw-cap constructed to fit the neck of the bottle, and to be compressed about the stemholding gasket-block: a stem-holding gasketblock fitting the upper part of the said cap and held therein by the compressed walls of the said cap, as described: a stem inserted in said block and constructed to hold a brush, and said brush substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 28th day of August, A. D. 1902.
WILLIAM H. BEECHING.
Witnesses:
FRANK G. PARKER, WILLIAM EDSON.
