.To all whom it newyconcern:
Be it known that 1, HORACE WooDwoR'rH ELDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dawkins, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Head-Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The invention relates to yhead-gates such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States No. 665,077, granted to me January 1, 1901.
The object of the present ,invention is to provide a new and improved headgate for use in irrigating-ditches and the like, arranged to form a portable dam in the ditch to control the Water owing through the gate upon the land to be irrigated without danger of the wa` ter leaking past the gate at the sides thereof and to prevent the bottom of the ditch from unduly washing out at the downstream side of the gate.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the sanne, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofr this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a cross-section of the ditch and the head-gate held in position therein, parts of the head-gate being shown in section and parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same as applied, the section being on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. f1 is a side elevation of the end of the anchor-brace embedded in the ground.
The body A of the head-gate is adapted to be set in the ditch in a transverse direction, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the said body is provided at or near its middle with an opening B and the sliding gate C to control the amount of Water iiowing from the head or upstream side of the ditch through the said opening B to the downstream side of the ditch and to the land to be irrigated. The sides of the body A are formed with guideways A for the side wings D to move in transversely, the said side wings having their outer edges D preferably made of thin sheet metal to readily cut into the banks of the ditch, as indicated in Fig. 1. The wings iD are provided at their upper ends with handles D2, adapted to be taken hold of by the operator to manipulate the said wings so as to move the edges D' into the banks when the head-gate is set up or out of the banks when the head-gate is removed from the ditch. The lower ends of the wings D are hung on links E, fulcrumed on the body A and similar in construction to the corresponding parts shown .and described in the Letters Patent of the United States above referred to, so that furi ther description thereof is not deemed necessary. On the upper ends of the Wings D are pivoted the arms E, extending transversely tovvward each other, and the lower edges of the said arms are formed with notches F', adapted to engage a pin G', held on a lever G, fulcrumed at its lower end at G2 on the body A, the said lever extending upwardly to allowt-he'operator to conveniently manipulate the said lever to engage the links E so as to lock fthe wings D in an outermost position at the time the edges D are in engagement with the banks of the ditch.
The bottom of the body A is provided with a depending transverse wing H, adapted to cut-down into the bottom of the ditch (s ee Fig. '3) to prevent water from leaking at this point through the head-gate and to assist in holding the head-gate lsecurelyin position iu the ditch.
In order to prevent the water from washing out the banks andv bottom of the ditch at the embedded portions of the wings D and H, I
Yprovide a iiexible protector I, preferably made of canvas or a like material, secured tothe under side ofv the bottom of the body A and to the sides thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings. Hinged braces 1 connect the outer edges of the protector I with the body A, so as to hold the said protector in a stretched position on the bottom and banks of the ditch. The side upper edges of the protector I are secured to bars J, connected by hinges J' with the body A at the sides thereof, so as allow of folding the sides of the protector onto the front face of the head-gate at ICO the time the head-gate is placed in position in the ditch. The arms J are provided with staples J2, adapted to be engaged by hooks J3, held on the body A, to lock the said arms .I in a folded position. The protector I is adapted to extend on the upstream side of the headgate, and a protector K, likewise of exible material, is adapted to extend in the bottom of the ditch at the downstream side of the head-gate, the said protector K being fastened to the bottom of the body A. Now it will be seen that when the gate C is open and the water Hows through the opening B itfalls upon the protector K,and consequently does not wash out the bottom of the ditch adjacent to the head-gate on the downstream side thereof.
In order to securely hold the head-gate in position, I prefer to employ an anchor-brace L, pivoted to the body A at the downstream side thereof, the hook L of the said brace being embedded in the bottom of the ditch, as indicated in Fig. 4.
In placing the head-gate in position the gate C is first removed and the protector I is held in a folded position on the body A and the wings D are held in an innermost position, and then the head-gate is placed transversely into the ditch. The side wings D are now pushed outward, so as to force their edges Dinto the banks of the ditch a sufficient distance to hold the gate stationary'. The anchor-brace L is now placed in position and its end embedded in the ground. The arms .I are now unlocked and swung outward to allow the protector I to open outwardly,and then the gate C is placed in position and closed to allow the water to accumulate on the front of the head-gate and to press on the protector I, so as to flatten the same out and press the same in firm contact with the banks and bottom of the ditch. The gate C is opened whenever desired to allow a desired amount of water to pass through the headgate and to the land to be irrigated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A head-gate comprising a body having an opening and a gate therefor, a flexible protector secured on the said body at the bottom and sides thereof, and braces extending from the body to the outer edges of the said protector, to hold the same in contact with the bottom and banks of the ditch at the upstream side of the head-gate, as set forth.
2. A head-gate comprising a body having an opening and a gate therefor, a flexible protectorsecured on the said body at the bottom and sides thereof, and braces extending from the body to the outer edges of the said protector, to hold the same in contact with the bottom and banks of the ditch at the upstream side of the head-gate, the top side edges of the said flexible protector being held on members hinged to the said body, as set forth.
3. In a head-gate, the combination with a body having an opening and a gate therefor, of side wings movable on the bodyand adapted to cut into the banks of a ditch, a lever pivoted to the body, and links having their outer ends pivoted to the wings and their inner ends in detachable engagement with the lever, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A head-gate, comprising a body having an opening and a gate therefor, side wings movable on said body and adapted to cut into the banks of a ditch, a lever pivoted to the body and provided with a lateral pin, and links pivoted at one end to the wings and provided at their free ends with notches adapted to engage the pin of the lever, as set forth.
5. The combination with a head-gate, comprising a body having an opening and a gate therefor, of bars hinged to the sides of the body to fold thereon, a protector secured to the body and bars, and braces connecting the outer edges of the protector with the body, as set forth.
6. The combination with the bodyofa headgate having an opening, and a gate controlling said opening, of bars hinged to the side edges of the body to extend into alinement therewith or to fold against the same, a flexible protector secured to the bodyr and arms, and hinged braces extending from the outer edge of the protector to the body, as set forth.
