To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, EWALD'M. SPDEKER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Grates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in water gates and particularly to that type used in connection with irrigation ditches or the like, the object of the invention being to provide a concrete gate adapted to be set in the banks of the ditch and provided with an opening covered by a suitable water tight slidable closure, whereby the passage of the water through the bank of the ditc may be accurately controlled.
A further object of the invention is to provide in the body of the gate suitable means so that when the two gates are disposed opposite each other on opposite banks of the ditch any other closure for the ditch itself may be suitably inserted between said body members so as to hold the water in the ditch, so that it will properly flow through the openings in the gates on each side of the ditch.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed. 7
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of gates disposed opposite each other showing the ditch closure in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved gate.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings the numeral 1 designates the body of the gate which is preferably made of cement or similar material and provided with an opening 2 which may be provided with a projecting dfiivery pipe 2 or not as is found desira e.

On each side of the opening 2 the body 1 is provided with a grooved guide 3, such guides tapering toward each other'at their lower ends. Removably disposed. within the guides 3 are liners 4 shaped to conform to the shape of the grooves 3 and mounted on a plate 5 which'fits over the space between the grooves 3 and. is provided with an opening 6 which registers with the opening 2. I v r The numeral 7 designates the closure which is provided with inwardly bent edges 8 shaped to conform to the edges of the liner 4-5, the upper end of the closure 7 being overturned as at 9 to form a lift handle for the closure. As can be noted from the drawing in Fig. 1 the body 1 of the gate is suitablv disposed in the bank 10 of the ditch. The closure 7 normally wedges into the liner plate 4 between the tapered guides 3 and the surfaces of the closure 7 and the member 5 are brought into close relation by means of the tapered guides 3 so as to form a water tight closure for the openings 2 and 6. When it is desired however, to admit water through these openings the closure 7 is lifted out of the guides 3 with an apparent result. The bent edges 8 of the closure 7 and the bent edges 4 of the liner are brought into very close relation when the closure 7 is drawn into closed position and this tends to prevent any leakage around the said edges when such is not desired.
The body portion 1 is provided in its face with another guide groove 11 so that when two of the gates 1 are disposed in the ditch on opposite sides thereof, a closure 12 similar to the closure 7 may be interposed in these grooves 11 to shut off the flow of water in the ditch. This is often a very decided advantage where there is a rapid flow or drop to the ditch, in order to hold the water back so as to give full flow through the gates 1.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described toward each other at their lower ends to form a tapered guide, and a tapered closu ing, as described.
2; A device of the character described corn-prising a body member provided with aii opening, said body member being provided with a pair of grooves extending toward each other at one end to form a tapered' guide, a liner disposed in said guide, such liner having bent edges conforming to said grooves, a closure extending into said guide and having bent edges conforming to said grooves, said closure being adapted to extend into said guide to close said openings,- as described.
