Description

UNITED STATES CHRISTIAN SCHALLBERGER, OF VANCOUVER, CANADA.
PATENT 'OFFICE.
WOOD-PRESERVING COMPOUND.
$PIEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,521, dated November 25, 1902.
Application filed October 28,1901. Renewed September 6, 1902. Serial No.122A22.
To ctZl' whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SOHALL- BERGER, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Compound for the Preservation and Protection of Wood, 850., of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a compound which will form a preservative protective covering to timber generally where it is exposed to destructive climatic influence, but especially intended for use on woodwork subject to the attack of teredo or pile-worm or on the bottoms of ships to prevent the attachment of barnacles, sea-weeds, &c.
The component parts of my compound in units of weight are as follows: asphaltum gum, six parts; linseed-oil, two parts,- fishoil, two parts; tallo'wjfoTfi parts; kauri'gum, one part; Manila gum, one part; rosin, eight parts; coal-tar, two parts; pitch, eight parts; creosote, one part; pine-pitch, two parts; black oxid of manganese, two parts. These ingredients are melted and thoroughly mixed together, and the resulting compound, when intended as a protection from teredo, is while hot spread over the exposed surface of the timber, and while still hot clean sharp sand (No specimens.)
is sprinkled on the outer surface and pressed or rolled in. When applied in this manner the compound forms an adherent preservative coating, tough and elastic enough to sustain. the shocks incident to structure and having a hard impenetrable outer skin, While the composition is such that it will'in itself resist the attack of the teredo.
to ships bottoms it may either be applied hot, as described, or When reduced with a suitable volatile solvent.
Having particularly described my inven-' tion, what I claim as new, and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A compound for the preservation and protection of wood, consisting of asph al tu pg gp rg, nsecri fiat-2 al r, k uir s nila gum, r osin, coal-tar, pitch, creosote, pine pitch and black oxid of manganese, in the proportions specified.
In witness whereof I have signed. my name to this specification in subscribing witnesses.
