JMES GONDOUIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORHTO HIMSELF AND FELIX AUMERLE, OF THE SAME PLACE.v i
, i Letters Patent No. 71,378, elated4 November 26, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN FUNNELS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: i Be it'known that I, JAMES GONDOUIN, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied 4 to use, a certain new and useful Improvements in Funnels';I and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had lto the annexed drawing; making part of this specification, whereinl i. n
Figure 1 is a vertical section -of my improved funnel and Figure 2 is a. plan of the same. Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. g The object of this inventionis to prevent the waste of liquids in the filling of bottles, barrels, and other vessels by the overflow of such liquids.
4 My said invention consists in a funnel provided with a. valve` held up by a latch,`that is relieved by the rising of -a Hoet, and allows the valve to fall and stop the further discharge of `liquid from the funnch By this device the funnel becomes self-closing, and the attendant can perform much more work thanheretofoie,
' because he does not have to examine and see when the vessel is full; he only-has to supply the liquid into the i funnel or series of funnels he may be using, and the rise of the liquid in tlremeceiving-vessel causes the shutting f oiiof further supply when n. given point has been reached, the remainder of 'the liquid remaining inthe funnel.
In the drawing, a represents the conical portion of the4 funnel, and b the nozzle. i c is a valve-seat at the bettom'of the tapering portion a, and d is a valveupon a hollow stem, e, that is guided in the `bridges f and z'.
g is a float with a. stem or light wire, 7L, extending up in the valve-stem e, and terminating as a ball or block, n.V
Z is a latch upon a fulcrum, lc, that has an inclined lower end, and m is a feather upon the stem e, to guide it in the bridgef, and also provided with o. head below the bridge to prevent the valve, stern and latch I being'rniscd above the point shown in g. 1, where it will be seen that the ball n within the stem'e preventsthe latch Z passing intosaid stem,'hence that the valve and stem will be held up by theinclinod end of said latch, but when the liquid running through the funnel rises in the vessel so as to lift the oat g, the; bloclc 'n moving up-allows i the latch to turn into-the stom e, and the valve d instantly closes, retaining the contents of the funnel, and preventing waste by overflow. The funnel is -again caused to discharge its contents `by simply lifting `the stem e, and valve d, the weight of the float causing its ball n to press out the latch to the position of'fig'. 1.
What I claim, and desire tol secure by Letters Patent, is-
The funnel a, and valve ,in combination with a dont, g, latch Z, and block n, suhstantiallyias and for the I purposes set forth. n
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature, this 11th day of October, 1867.
' d. GONDOUIN.` Witnesses:
Ones, H. SMITH, GEO. T. PrNcKNnv.
