WILLIAM S.l PAYNE,l OF PETROLEUM CENTRE, PENNSYLVANIA.

IMPROVEMENT INAUTOMATIO SELF-CLOSING sARRBLrILLINe APPARATUS.

TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, WILLIAMS. PAYNE, of Petroleum Centre, in the county of Venango, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Automatic Barrel-Filler; and I do herebydeclare the follow l ing to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in whichi i Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate cor-responding part-s in the two figures.
In this invention when the barrel is filled the spigot closes itself` and lifts itself out of the barrel autol matically. This barrel-iller is designed to-beV used for filling casks, tanks, cisterne, the water-tanks of steam engines, and, in general, all vessels or receptacles that are to be filled with liquids. Its object is to economize labor, one man with my barrel-filler being able to accomplish the work ot' six inenwithout it.
' In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to make and use the same, I will proceed-to describe it in detail.
In the drawings2 A-,represents theend ofthe spigot that is attached to the reservoir. B is the body or tube of the spigot, emptying the fluid into the vessel to be illed at C. The tube B is jointed to the pipe .IL by the watertightjoint D, which permits the end C to be raised or depressed. VE is a vertical tube, attached tothe tube B, within which is the rod e, bearing on its lower extremity the valve E', which when elevatedl opens, and 'when depressed closes the passage from the reservoir to the barrel. The rod e plays-freely up and down in the tube E, and is provided with a spring, c', to h old it and its attached valve down tightly. At the top of the ro'd e is a handle, F, by means Ofwhich the rod e is lifted, and the spigot opened.' When the rod e is thus lifted the rod g attached to the handle F rises in the tube G r, which is also a vertical tube alxed to the spigot B, and the stop H is forced under it by the spring I, holding it up, .and thus holding the spigot open.V The liquid now liows freely into the cask until it is full, when the cork K is lifted by it, and elevates the rod L, .operating Vthe lever M, pitman N, and lever O, and by means of the trigger 4P pushes the stop H out from under the rod g, and permits the valve E to close the spigot. `It is a cord, attached to the lever M or rod L, running over the pulleys S S, and weighted atT. The weight J is so proportioned to the weight of the movable part B of the spigot that when the latter is iilled with the running fluid it will outweigh the former, but when emptied by the closing of the valve E, as above described, the weight T is the heavier, and will lift it out of the barrel.
One man can easily attend to six of these instrumentswhen at work, and thus accomplish the work of six men operating in the old way. An engineer with this instrument can set it in operation and then go about his business, oiling his engine, 82e. When the tank is iilled the water will be shut off, and the instrument withdrawn from the tank. AIt may be used about vstores in lling casks, bottles, jugs, the., and effect in many cases a great saving of labor.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ils- 1. The combination of the tubes A and B jointed at- D with the vertical tubes E and G, the valve E', valvcrod e, handle F, rod g', stop H, spring I, and trigger P, substantially Aas and for the purpose specied.
2. The combination of `the float K, rod L, lever M, pitman N, lever 0, trigger P, cord R, and weight T, substantially as and for the purposespecied. l i
To the above specification of my improvement I lhave signedmy hand this day of May, 1867.
WQS. PAYNE.
