IIVIPROVEIVIENT IN BOTTLE-FILLING APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, PETER M. Snnnwoon, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Bottle-Filling Machine and I dc hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements made in a bottle-filler, for which Letters Patent were issued to Theodore Cochen, dated the 5th day of June, 1866, the entire interest in which patent has been duly assigned to me; and the invention consists in the arrangement and construction of other siphon-valves, in combination with the reservoir described in said patent, and which are shown in the present application, and inthe construction of the valve-movements of the siphons, aud in the application of other appendages to the reservoir, and in combination therewith, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 isa sectional elevation of the reservoir, showing the .parts which embrace my improvements, with some of the improvements themselves.
Figure 2'represents a siphon, with a valve at its receiving-end, and attached to the inner side of the reservoir.
Figure 3 shqws a Siphon arranged to admit discharge-tubes or nozzles of diiferent sizes.
Figure 4 represents a top view ofthe device for holding bottles by the neck, and keeping them in place while being lled, the position of which is seen in iig.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding arts. P A is the reservoir, which is a water-tight vessel, as described in the patent before alluded to, and is provided with a feed-pipe andA valve, which valve is governed by a float in its opening and closing, so that the liquid is allowed to enter the reservoir only as it is required for filling the bottles.
The particular purpose for which this apparatus is intended is lling bottles, jugs, kegs, or cans, and other vessels with any kind of liquid; and the iloat in the reservoir is ,so adjusted that the liquid is kept at a uniform height in the reservoir.
B`is-an adjustable shelf, attached to the outside of the reservoir by the slotted arms C, and heldin place by bolts on each side, as seen atd.
The bottle on the shelf (seen in red) is placed as being filled by the siphon, marked E.
The delivery-end of this s iphon, E,'is provided with a valve, with an extension-stem, e, the valve being opened when the stem strikes the bottom of the bottle or vessel.
The length of the stem can be adjusted to suit the vessel by screwing or unscrewing the stem.
The other (or receiving) end of this siphon is also provided' with a valve, which is opened and closed by the slotted arm j', which is ttached to the inner side of the reservoir.
The valve g is attached to the flanged sleeve h.
The flange or collar i has a pin, j, which slides in,
the slot of j'.
The siphon is hinged to the top of the reservoir at q, so that when the delivery-end-is drawn from the reservoir, the valve is closed, and when it is pushed towards the reseivoi'r, it is opened.
The siphon H is open at its receiving-end, but its delivery-end is provided with a valve which acts automatically. l I
l is the valve, whose stem is attached to a collar, m, by the wires n.
o is a collar on the siphon.
` p is 'a spiral spring, between the two collars.
In lling, the nozzle of the bottle is pushed against the collar m, which lifts the valve, and the liquid flows in.
When the bottle is removed, the spring closes the valve.
This siphon (as well as all the others) is hinged to the top of the reservoir, as seen at q.
J, fig. 2, represents a siphon attached to the inner front side of the reservoir, and provided with a valve, which is actuated by working the Siphon back and forth on its pivot-hinge q.
The' end of the Siphon is provided with packing, and packing is also attached to the reservoir.
The packingof each is seen in red at lr.
The iextent of the movement is governedby a slotted plate and pin, seen at S, and the valve is closed bythe reaction of the spring t, which draws the two packingplates (or valve and seat) together, making a tight joint.
K, iig. 3, represents a siphon with its end arranged to attach delivery-tubes of di'iierent sizes.
For this purpose I attach a collar, u, to the siphon, and cut a screw-thread therein, so that any deliverytube, provided with a corresponding screw, can be at tached, as seen inthe drawing.
.For measuring out denite and'fractional quantities of liquid from the reservoir, I provide a separate vessel, L, with a glass or tiansparentportion marked o' or graduated, so as to indicate certain quantities.
This vessel I attach by a set-screw to the cock c in the reservoir.
The delivery-tube to this measuring-vessel is si 'ir in its construction to what is described in the patent,
but the valve e is made tapering, and the slidingA sheath or sleeve w is made to fit.
'lhe liquid enters the tube laterally from the reseri the sleeve, which enlarged portion encloses a spiralv spring, and is lprovided with a bayonet-fastening device, as seen at z, so that the valve can be left open as long as may be desired.
Vhen the sleeveeis released from the fastening-pin, the Vessel is closed bythe recoil of the spring.
This bayonet-fastening is applied to the delivery-tube of the measuring-vessel L, the fastening-pin being seen at 2.
For holding the bottles by the neck, or keeping thein in place when being filled, I attach the bar a. to the reservoir, and make it adjustable thereon by two slotted arms, l), (one on' each side,) as in the case of the shelf B.
By the slotted arms, the bar a., as well as the shelf B, is fastened out or in, so as to accommodate the bottles or vessels, and they are both made otherwise adjustable by the thumb-screws rl at their ends, as seen in the drawing.
The tapering ground valve c', and sleeve w, and also the bayonet-fastening, are applied to the filling-faucet,
This faucet screws into the reservoir, and is designed for filling bottles independently of the other apparatus.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The valves, as arranged on the interior and exterior ends of the Siphon E, said Siphon being combined with a reservoir, substantially as described.
2. The Valve Z, arranged as described, on the delivery-end of the Siphon H, with the collars m o, spring p, and yoke n, substantially as and for the Vpurpose specified.
3. The bayonet-fastening s, in combination and v ranged with the tapering valve fr', the spiral spring,`
and the sleeve w, having the enlarged portion 1 and the flange x adapted to fit upon the mouth of the bottle, all operating as described, whereby, as the bayonet-catch is released, the sleeve rw is thrown outward, to close the orice fi in the valve c', as and for the purpose specified.
4. The C-shaped Siphon J, hinged to the top ofthe reservoir at g, and provided at its interior end with a packing, lr, adapted to work against a packing aiixed to the reservoir A, the whole constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
5. The adjustable bar a and shelf B, constructed and arranged substantially as shown'and described, in combination with the reservoir A, for the purposes specified. I 6. The faucet y', embracing the tapering valve v', sleeve w, and the bayonet-fastening z, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
