SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming 'partof Letters Patent No. 713,026, datedNovember 4, 1902-. Application filed May 16,1902. Serial No. 107,597. (No model.)
To 00% whom, it ntaty concern:
Be it known that I, PENNocK MARSHALL WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tallapoosa,in the county of Haralson,State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to suspenders; and it has for its object to provide a construction wherein the usual elastic or rubber may be omitted therefrom and in place of may be used inelastic webbing, the ease and comfort with the freedom of movement secured'by the rubber being obtained in the present instance by the peculiar structure of the connecting devices between the shoulder-straps and the rear tabs. The result is a more durable construction, and the structure specifically is such as to give the greatest ease of movement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a rear elevation showing a pair of suspenders embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view including portions of a shoulder-strap and a rear tab and including the connecting-links and the central plate to which they are connected.
Referring now to the drawings, the sus-' penders comprise two separate shoulderstraps 5 and 6, which at their forward end portions are provided with the usual buckles 7 and 8,to which are connected tabs 9 and 10 for engagement with the front suspenderbuttons.
To mutually connect the rear ends of the.
shoulder-straps and to attach the rear tabs 11 and 12, there is employed a central plate 13,having loops l4 and 15 at its ends. Through the loop l t-are engaged two links 16 and 17, each of which consists of a metal strap 18 and 19, respectively. The strap 18 has laterallyenlarged ends 20 and 21, through which are formed laterally-extending slots 22 and 23, the strap being passed through the loop 14 'able metal.
and then bent upon itself, so that the ends thereof aline and the slots in the ends register. Thestrap 19 has laterally-broadened end portions 24 and 25, in which are the slots 26 and 27, said strap being passed also through the loop 14 and then bent upon itself, so that the end portions aline and their slots register. The straps '18 and 19 are thus loosely connected to the central plate and are movable freely with respect thereto. The shoul der-strap 5 is engaged at its rear end through the slots of the strap 18, while the rear tab 11 is engaged through the slots of the strap 1 9,said straps 18 and 19 being of any suit- With the loop 15 of the plate 13 are engaged also upper and lower straps 28 and 29, of metal, and having broadened and slotted end portions which are bent upon themselves, so that their respective slots register the same as the straps 18 and 19. Through the slots of the strap 28 is engaged the second shoulder-strap 6, while with the be noted that when the wearer raises one shoulder the plate 13 is tilted, and because of the straps being loosely and pivotally connected with the plate this movement is easily 8o N permitted. 7
It will be understood that the metal portions may be wholly or partly covered with leather or other suitable material, that modifications of the specific construotionshown may be made, and that any suitable materials or proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. What is claimed is* A pair of suspenders comprising a plate having terminal loops, two straps engaged through each loop, each strap being .bent upon itself and having registering openings in its ends, a shoulder-strap engaged-through 5 the openings of one strap of'each loop and a tab engaged through the openings of the other strap of the sameloop. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
