M. E. ZELLER. HAABNESS `LCIP. (Application ined Dec. 27. 1901,)
(Nulludel.)
UNITED TnTns PATENT Fries.
MELANOTHON E. ZELLER, OF LEIPSIO, OHIO.
HARNESS-LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,890, dated November 4, 1902.
Application filed December 27, 1901. Serial No. 87,472. (No model.)
Be it known that I, MnLANcTHoN E. ZEL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leipsic, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Loops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the Yart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements more particularly in strap-fasteners.
It has for its object especially to dispense with riveting the strap in effecting connection thereof with the fastener proper and to otherwise promote compactness, facility, convenience, and simplicity.
The nature of the invention consists of the detailed construction and combination of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specially pointed out by the claims.
In lthe accompanying drawings, illustrating the, preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 2 is a detached side View of the frame or loop. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached end and perspective views, respectively, of the same part. Y
In carrying out my invention I produce a loop or frame 1, preferably as shown, being substantially of bell-crank form in its general outline, so that when connected up operatively with the other parts presently de-Iy scribed it will normally have-its angle or vertex intermediate of its end portions. Also it will be noted that the arms of the bellcrank are of unequal length, the longer one having the forward end cross-barand tonguebar. Said loop or frame has at its ends cross or connection bars 1c ICC, respectively, at its vertex or angle a connecting-bar l, and intermediately of the bars 1cc 1b a bar le, having a tongue 2, preferably deliected in a direction away from said bar 1C. It will be noted that the tongue-bar 1e is arranged close to the forward end bar lco, so close as just to permit the passage therebetween of a single strap and also preferably in alinement or the same plane with said bar 10c, permitting its tongue 2 to normally stand above said lat- I ter bar. Also it will be observed that a plane' passing through the bars 1cc and 1e passes intermediately or between the bars 1b and ld, compacting the vpassage of the folded portions of the strap. Said tongue has its free end normally presented upwardlyin order to provide for the passage ofthe strap eectively therefrom under said bar 10, as will be appreciated. Also it Will be observed that the remaining bars above referred to are arranged or disposed in such relative proximity as to provide for the compact passage of the strap therebetween and through the loop or frame, the purpose of which is apparent in constructing a fastener of the character especially such as had in view herein. A buckle 3 of ordinary form having a tongue 3a has its tongue-carryingbarj uxtaposed to the forward end bar l of said frame or loop, with the inner end of said tongue bearing or let into a notch l, produced in said bar 1.
Roved or passed through the frame 1 is a strap 4 to form end loops 4a 4 thereof for connecting together, more especially hame-sections, at their lower ends upon the collar, as is usually done in this particular. In order to effect the formation of the strap into said end loops, I preferably connect up said strap near one end with the tongue 2 of the bar 1e and pass it between said tongue-bar and the forward end bar l and downwardly under said latter bar and upwardly, effecting connection at this point with the buckle and its tongue, as shown. Said strap is next passed back through the frame 1 above the bar 1cc le, lapping itself, and under the bar 1d, being thence extended considerably beyond that end of said frame and returned through said frame, forming the end loop 4, it being passed over the bar 1b, under itself, and under the tongue-bar 1e and again returned, being connected up with the buckle-tongue, thus forming the second end loop 4, it finally being tucked under the top rear end bar 1c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A strap-fastener, comprising a frame, a strap and a buckle, said frame having a series of intermediate cross bars, one having a tongue or stud arranged close to the forward end cross-bar, for engagement with said strap,
IOO
said strap beingr passed therebetween and connected up with said buckle and formed into opposite end loops.
2. A strap-fastener, comprising a frame, a double-looped strap roved or passed through said frame and a buckle connected up with said frame by said strap, said frame being of substantially bell-@rank form in general outline, with one arm longer than the other, and having a series of cross-bars, arranged at its respective ends, at its vertex or angle, a fourth just below the upper rear end cross-bar, and a tongue-bar arranged close to the forward cross-bar, with its tongue having the free end presented upwardly, substantially as shown and described.
3. A strap-fastener, comprising a frame substantially of a bell-crank form in general outline and having unequal-lengthed arms and having a series of cross-bars, arranged at its respective ends, at its angle, a. fourth just below the upper rear cross-bar, and a tonguebar arranged close to the forward end crossbar, with its tongue having the free end presented upwardly, abuckle having its tonguecarrying,r bar juxtaposed to said forward end cross-bar, with the inner end of the tongue thereof bearing in a recess or notch in said last-referred-to cross-bar, and a strap roved through or Connected up with said frame and buckle, and having loops, one formed at each end of said frame, substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
