CANE.
SPEGIFIGATIONIformingpart of Letters Patent No. 712,804, dated November 4, 1902 ll pplieatio n filed July 14, 1902.
to which it appertains to make and use the same Myinvention relates to certain new and use ful improvements involved in the construction and combination of parts necessary to provide a cane, and my invention will be hereinafter clearly setforth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of thisapplication.
The object of my invention is to provide a cane which will possess great beauty of ap- 2o pearance and great strength and rigidity notwithstanding the several parts are-separately formed and afterward united in their respective operative positions.
A further object of my invention is to make it possible to employ a wide range of ornamentation of certain parts whereby the ornamental features may be changed, and therefore vary the appearance of the cane as may be desired.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 shows the upper end of my cane Fig. 2 is a similar view, excepting that the upper end of the. cane is shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 shows the several part-s of my improved cane separated from each other ready to be assembled in their operative positions. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view showing one of the ornamental parts or panels removed.
Referring to the various details of my invention and necessary elements required to properly illustrate the application thereof to use, all of said parts will be referred to by reference-numerals, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of my improved cane or stick proper, which is turned off at SerialNo.115,473. (1% model.)
its upper endto provide a tenon or stem 2', having the base portion 3 of slightly larger diameter. Upon the shoulder formed bythe reduced diameter 3 I place the thimble 4,
which is thus disposed so that the outer sur-- 1 face thereof will be left flush or level with the outer surface'of the stick or cane proper. The upper end of the handle 4 is provided with the rib-like enlargement 5, thus affording the shoulder or offset 6, which shoulder is adapted to receive the lower end of each of the rib-sections 7of the head 8, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Between each of the rib-sections 7 I form the longitudinally-disposed groove or recess 9,within which I dispose the removable panelsection 10, which may be formed ofany material, preferably some ornamental substance, as ivory, mother-of-pearl, or the like. The upper end of each of the recesses 9 is cut under or extended into a contiguous portion of the head 8, whereby the rounded end 11 of the panel 10 may extend under or occupy said recess, as indicated by the numeral 12, and it is therefore obvious that since the lower end of each of the panels will rest under and be engaged by the rib or lip section 5 all of said panels will be very reliably secured in place and held against casual displacement.
The head 8 is provided with a longitudinal bore, as indicated by the numeral 13, of proper size to snugly receive the tenon 2, formed upon the u pper end of the cane or stick proper,
and in order that the head and stick may be reliably united together I form in the end of the tenon 2 a centrally-disposed threaded aperture adapted to receive the screw or lock ing bolt 14, which is formed with the head 15, which latter is of proper size to snugly fit within the opening 16, formed in the extreme upper end of the head 8. The edges of the head 15 will therefore be engaged and held againstdownward movementby the ofiset or shoulder 17, and it is obvious that by properly rotating the cane or stick proper in the right direction a very reliable and effective union will be set up by means of the threaded bolt 14 between the head and cane, thereby insuring that said parts will be reliably united together. I also form in the extreme end of the head 8 a suitable annular recess adapted to receive the main portion of the closure 18, which should also be made of some ornamental substance, as mother-of-pearl, or may comprise a silver or gold plate adapted to receive the monogram or name of the owner of the cane or other suitable inscription. If desired, the closure-section 18 may be hinged in position, the hinge being secretly disposed in a suitable securing device provided to hold the closure in place, thereby providing a secret chamber (indicated by the numeral 16 in Fig. 2) adapted to receive any articles or substances of which the owner may desire to safely dispose.
It will be understood that the cane may be made very desirable for any individual person or for members of lodges and societies of various kinds, inasmuch as the thimble or coupling 4 or any other part may be provided with the emblem or emblems of such lodges or societies or the monogram or other device preferred by the individual, thereby fitting the cane as being an object of great desirability to such person or persons.
It will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be made of any preferred material deemed most suitable for the purpose and may be made of any desired size to meet allthe varying requirements, and while I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts deemed necessary in materializing my invention I wish to comprehend all substantial equivalents and substitutes that maybe considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention and the manner of assembling the parts thereof together, further reference to the details is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described cane comprising a cane or stick proper 1, having a reduced end or tenon 2, provided with the head 8 having the bore adapted to receive said tenon; a thimble designed to overlap and unite the meeting ends of said head and cane; a locking-bolt adapted to unite the head and tenon reliably in union, said head being provided with a plurality of longitudinally-disposed recesses and ribs, and a plurality of ornamental plates or panels 10 one for each of said recesses and a suitable closure-cap 18 adapted to inclose the open upper end of the head 8 substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIS WILLIMOTH JONES.
