Beit known that I, VILLIAM E. JAQUES, a citizen ofthe United States of America. residing at Grand Rapids, in the `county of` Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain 'below its channel `or path c, with a down- `wardly-extending portion lz., which extends new and useful Improvements in Roadways; yand I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it pertains to make and use the same.
This Vinvention relates to improvements in roadways, and more especially to the provision of a roadway with an improved traekfor vehicle-wheels.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a roadway having a track which is composed, in the main, ofcement or artificial' stone and which is durable, inexpensive, and' not liableto displacement.
With this object in View and to the end of realizing other advantages hereinafter appearing myinvention consists in certain features of 'construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in theclaims. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a transverse vertical section of` a portion'of my improved roadway. Fig. II is a vertical longitudinal section on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. 3o III is a vertical longitudinal section on lines III III, Fig. I, looking inwardly.
Referring to the drawings, a designates the bed of a roadway provided with a track Z) for the wheels of bicycles or other vehicles.
The track b extends longitudinally of the roadway and is composed, preferably, of cement or artificial stone and is provided at the top and centrally with a channel c, which extends longitudinally of `the track and forms a 4o rut or path for vehicle-wheels and is preferably shallow and has the outline required to form a path which is rounded transversely.
The central portion of the track b, at each side oi its channel c, extends somewhat above the road-level, as at d; but the top or upper surface of the track, at each side of the chan- -nel c, slopes laterally and downwardly, as at e, toward the adjacent side edge f of the upper portion of the'track from the top of the 5o aforesaid channel.
- The upper portion of the track b is embedfered with.
ded along its side edges f in the adjacent portions of the road-bed a., having the lower portions ot its upper sloping surfaces e overlapped, as at g, by the said bed.
The track bis provided, preferably directly also longitudinally of the track. The lower and narrower portion h of the track is pref- 6o erably as wide as the channel c and is embedded within the bed a.
By the construction hereinbefore described the track is rendered strong audfhas adequate bearing within the road-bed, displacement of the track either horizontally or vertically is prevented, and the use of the road-bed as `a highway for general travel and the appearance of the roadway are not materially inter- 7 It isobvious that any water forming in the channel c or flowing into the said channel is displaced by wheels traveling in and along the channel and that the sloping surfaces e `at the sides of the channel will drain water 1displaced from the channelor from any source forming or owing upon the track, from the trackinto the bed a.
The said sloping surfaces e also facilitate the passageof the vehicle-wheels to and from the channel c.
The track is composed, preferably, ofa continuous section of cement extending `from end to end of the track, but may be made of many sections assembled end to end.
Any suitable number of cables k are embedded in and extend longitudinally of the track. The cables 7o reinforce the track and prevent separation or displacement endwise as well as laterally of the track of parts of the track should the track `become cracked 9o transversely at one or more points. Y
Preferably two cables k extend through the upper and wider portion of the track at opposite sides, respectively, of the lower portion h of the track.
Each side of the downwardly-projecting lower and narrower portion' 71, vot" the track preferably bulges, swells, or enlarges-laterally and outwardly, as at Z, a suitable distance below the upper and wider portion of the loo track, so as to form recesses m between the swells Z and the upper 'and wider portion of the track, and the bed ct enters or extends into the said recesses,and consequently overhangs the said lateral enlargement Z of the portion 7L of the track,and thereby materially participates in holding the track down in place.
The laterally-enlarged lower portion of the member h of the track is hollow,and the channel or passage-way r formed therein extends longitudinally of the track,'so that the said portion of the said member hforms a conduit for drainage or for cables.
What I claim is* 1. The combination, with the bed of a roadway, of a track for a vehicle-wheel, which track is composed of artificial stone and provided, at the top, with a path for a vehiclewheel, and a cable arranged within and extending longitudinally of the track, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the bed of a roadway, of a track for a vehicle-Wheel,which track is arranged, in the main, within the bed,and is provided, at its top and centrally between its sides, with a path which extends longitudinally of the track, which top slopes laterally and downwardly from both sides of the said path, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the bed of a roadway, of a track having a path formed thereon and extending longitudinally thereof, which track has upwardly facing and laterally downwardly sloping surfaces at both sides of the said path, and has its upper portion embedded in the bed of the roadway at and along the lower portion of the said sloping surfaces.
4. The combination, with the bed of a roadway, of a path-forming track extending longitudinally of the roadway and having a path formed thereon and extending longitudinally thereof, which track has upwardly-facing surfaces sloping laterally downwardly from the aforesaid path and has its upper portion wider than its lower portion and embedded in the bed of the roadway along the side edges of the said upper portion.
5. The combination, with the bed of a roadway, of a path-forming track extending 1ongitudinally of the roadway, and having a path formed thereon and extending longitudinally thereof centrally widthwise of the track, which track has the upper surfaces of its upper portion sloping laterally and downwardly from the aforesaid path, and has its said upper portion embedded in the bed along the side edges of the said portion, and has a portion extending downwardly into the bed centrally between the side 'edges of its aforesaid upper portion.
, 6. The combination, with the bed of aroad- Way, of a path-forming track arranged,` in the main, within the bed, and having its upper portion wider than its lower portion, and two cables arranged within and extending longitudinally of the Lipper and wider portion of the track at opposite sides, respectively, of the aforesaid narrower and lower portion.
7. A wheel-track having the following: an upward portion wider than the lower portion, and a channel or passage-way extending longitudinally and interiorly of the lower portion.
8. A wheel-track having the following: an upper portion wider than the lower portion, a lateral enlargement at both sides of the said lower portion a suitable distance below the upper portion, and a channel or passageway extending longitudinally and interiorly of the lower portion.
