Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. f2, 19M?.
Application filed .T une 12, 1916. Serial No. 103,204.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL ELLiNGsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kimball, in the county of Brule, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tracks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in tracks, and more particularly to a track for automobiles, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the track sections can be easily laid on a roadway so that automobiles can travel thereover with ease, and without the danger of puncture and blow outs to which pneumatic tires are subjected when traveling over rough and uneven roadways. The track is particularly adapted for use on strips of roadways which are in bad condition.
A still further object of the invention is to find a novel means for connecting the adjacent ends of the track sections.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described7 claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a section of Vthe track. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3--3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a side elevation of the device.
lThe rails l are made in the desired length of suitable sheet metal, and are rolled or pressed into the desired shape. The rail consists of bases 2 which are curved slightly transversely so as to conform to the contour of the conventional` form of pneumatic tires. rlhe outer edges of the bases 2 terminate in curved sides 3, said sides having their upper ends terminating in downwardly directed flanges 4:, said flanges having their lower ends terminating in horizontal flanges 5. The inner edges 0f the bases 2 are also provided with sides 6, and anges 7 and 8, which are identical in shape to the first named sides and flanges, but are of less height. The flanges 5 and 8 are provided with openings 9 which register with the openings in the tie bars 10, said bars being of such width that their ends will engage the adjacent flanges of a pair of rails. The bases 2 are provided with transverse slots 11 which will permit any foreign matter which collects thereon to pass through the slots thereby assuring, atv all times, a smooth running surface. The rails are supported in proper spaced relation on the ties 12, said rails being connected there* to in any suitable manner.
What is claimed is A track of the class described formed from sheet metal, and bent to provide curved bases, said bases having their longitudinal edges terminating in curved sides, said sides terminating in vertical iianges, said flanges in turn terminating in horizontal flanges for engaging a tie, tie bars connecting the adjacent ends of the rails and overlapping the horizontal flanges thereof, said bases having transverse slots formed therein, as and for the purpose set forth.
ln testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
