CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. '7l 1,817', dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed October 18, 1901. Serial No. 79.163. (No model.)
To all lll/1,0m, 'lit may con/067172,.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS FRANCIS Boem, Jr., a citizen of the United States` residing at Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clips, and has for its objects the production of a device of this character adapted to secure against casual disconnection of the contiguous or adjacent parts of an article or articles of wearing-apparel; second, to provide a device of the kind named adapted to be secured to an article bf apparel in such manner as to obviate the necessity of attaching and detaching the clip therefrom when removing or replacing the garment; and third, to provide an improved device which may be conveniently utilized as a garment-supporter.
The invention consists in-an improved article of manufacture of novel construction hereinafter describedand claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my irnproved device in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe provided with my improved clip, illustrating one manner in which the same may be utilized. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the clip. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 4 isa rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of aslight modification. Fig. 6 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 7 is a rear elevation. Fig. 8 is a view showing the blank eX- tended.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 8, l designates the blank from which the device is constructed, consisting of a single piece of suitable sheet metal formed with an attachingplate 2, of any suitable contour, from which are stamped fastening-prongs 3, adapted to be projected through the material to which the clip is attached and then turned down to clamp the device in position. As shown at et, the base-plate and the intermediate portion l is bent to form a curve, having its opposite ends elongated so as to extend laterally in loop form, whereby the same is adapted to coact with the upper edges of the upper of the shoe. In front of the port-ion 4 I form a circular portion 5, having an aperture 6, adapted to take in and engage over the knot of the lacing, and thus hold the tie from becoming loose. From the circular part 5 an extension 7 is made, adapted to have its end turned into a bead or rounded portion S, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, so as to provide a smooth edge to prevent abrasion or wear of contacting surfaces. Between the base and intermediate portion and below the curved portion of the loops are interposed the opposite side-lacing edges of the upper of the shoe, so that when the upper edges of the upper are inclosed in the loops the side edges of the same will be inclosed between the space of the base-piece and intermediate piece.
To form the articlefrom the blank described, the part 5, with a portion of the part ta, is bent down upon the blank, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to form a spring-lip and the fastening-plate bent down on the vertical-part 4, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to form a channel and a vertical part Vdirected upward and bent down on the intermediate portion.
Fig. l of the drawings illustrates the manner of attaching my improvement to a shoe. The shoe is of the us ual construction, in which 9 designates the uppers, secured together by a lace 10, and 11 the tongue thereof. In attaching the clip thereto the former is secured to the tongue ll by inserting the fasteningprongs 3 therein and bending them back. The adjacent ends of the uppers are received in the extendedseat of the clip, thus presenting the spring-lip 5 upon the exterior of the shoe ready to receive the bow of the lace 10, the knot of which fits wit-hin the aperture 6, holding said bow against casual disconnection.
In Figs. 5, 6, and 7 I have shownka slight modification of my improved clip, consisting of an attaching-plateilf,'substantially the same as the plate 2, and a spring-lip 13. This form of clip is especially adapted for use upon low shoes and as a garment-supporter, and it is attached to an article of wearing-apparel in the same manner as the form shown in Figs.
IOO
. L I l "I I 2, 3, and 4. In order that the clip may not become accidentally detached from an article where the fastening-prong 3 cannot secure a firm hold, I provide the plate 2 with perforations la in order to permit the clip to be sewed to an article.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modications may be made therein Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 5o in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS FRANCIS BOGIA, JR.
