SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,741, dated October '7, 1902.
Serial No. 113,516. (No model.)
'o all whom t Tuin/ 7j cm1/cern:
Be it known thatV I, ADAM BERNINGER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embossed Pictures, of which the following is a specification, reference being'had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in embossed pictures, and has for its Object the provision ot' novel means whereby lifelike figures are produced.
A further object of my invention is to manufacture pictures containing figures, said iigures being pressed of celluloid and modeled to bring forth the contour of the face and limbs and then colored.
My invention also aims to produce the body portion of the figures of pressed celluloid to bring forth the exact folds and drapery of the garments or to drape the saine of fabric to represent the clothing, the said fabric or celluloid being stitched or otherwise attached -t-o the dark background, which is preferably of black velvet, the entire picture being secured in a box-frame having a glass or transparent covering.
Another object of this invention is to produce a picture which will be extremely siniple, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient, and one that will present both an attractive and pleasing appearance.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had t0 the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a picture secured in the frame according to my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form,
ln the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the ordinary vbox-frame, having a glass or transparent front face 2. 11i said frame is secured a layer of fabric 3, which is of dark material and is preferably velvet. AUpon said velvet are secured, by means of stitches, pieces of pressed celluloid 4, which represent the flesh portions ofy the figure. Around said celluloid pieces l are draped pieces of fabric 5, which may be of different colors to represent the garments or robes in which the figures are draped, the fabric being preferably silk. A portion of the background inay also be formed of embossed celluloid and then colored, if desired.
The many advantages produced from both a commercial and artistic standpoint will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
1t will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what vI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. As a new article of manufacture, the combination of fabric background, embossed celluloid figures secured thereon, draperies of fabric secured adjacent to said celluloid upon said background, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the combination of a frame, a velvet background secured therein, embossed celluloid portions of figures secured thereon, draperies of fabric secured upon said velvet background adjacent to said portions of figures, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADAM BERNINGER.
