M LAIDLOW GARMENT HANGER.
(Application filed June 13, 1901 (No Model.)
' '1llllllmllllllllllllll UNtTED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
MARIANNE LAIDLOW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARM ENT-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,698, dated October '7, 1902.
Application filed June 13, 1901. Serial No. 64,434. (No model.)
To (LZZ wit/0777 7 15 nmy concern.-
Be it known that I, MARIANNE LAIDLow, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that class of devices constructed to support garments in a suitable manner, by which the said garments may be hung upon the wall or other suitable place for the purpose of preserving the same and preventing them from unnecessary wrinkling.
The object of my invention is to produce a device which shall be adjustable for garments of different sizes and kinds.
To this end my invention consists-in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference-letters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents my improved hanger as connected with a supplemental hanger, thus forming what may be termed a double support or form for garments. Fig.2 isalongitudinalsection through one end of the adjustable support and the connecting-rod. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a threaded sleeve adapted to be positioned in the end form for the reception of the threaded rod. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form. Fig. 7 is a View of one form of locking device for the same, and Fig. 8 is a transverse section on line 8 8 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, A A are suitable end forms or frames, which may be constructed of any desired contour. These end forms are connected by adjustable means, so that the distance between them may be varied as desired, thus accommodating the device to garments of different sizes. In the form shown in Fig. 1 each of the forms is provided with a suitable body B, affording means forinternally-screw-threaded bores b, which are preferably what are termed right and left in the respective forms. The connecting means, as shown in Fig. 1, consists of a rod 0, having upon its respective ends a screwthreaded section, which is also right and left, the threads being constructed to engage with the screw-threaded bores. Dy rotating the rod 0 the distance between the forms may be varied, as stated, their approach or separation being substantially uniform.
c is a suitable button secured tothe rod for convenience for rotating the same. Any prc ferred means may be employed for supporting and hanging the device. Thus a vertical rod D may loosely engage the rod C, as shown, collars c 0' serving to retain the rod D in suitable position near the center of the device. In the preferred form also the rod D has formed thereon a supplemental hook c to aid in suitably hanging the garments on the form. As thus shown in Fig. 1, the device is particularly adapted as a skirt-hanger, the blocks B B being raised in a manner permitting the band of the skirt to be supported thereon and encircling them and the hook 0 being positioned for supplemental engagement with the band of the skirt. As stated, the forms may be separated by operating the bar C so as to snugly fit skirts of diiferent sizes. In the preferred form I also construct a suitable form upon the supporting'bar D, as shown in the arms (1 (1. As thus constructed the same device is adapted for the support of a skirt. and also a waist or other garment.
e is a sleeve constructed to be inserted in the bore 1), in cases where the part 1) maybe of wood or other soft material, for the purpose of maintaining the screw-threaded construction, the same being provided with 1ongitudinally-disposed ribs to preventindependent rotation thereof.
In the forms shown in Figs. 6, 7, and S the adjusting means is somewhat different, although the result is substantially the same. As here shown, each of the forms A B is provided with a rod H, constructed to slide upon the similar rod of the other form to regulate the distance between the forms. A suitable retaining and locking device must be provided, which in the drawings consists of a spring-loop K, through which the bars II pass, while a pivoted lever L, having formed thereon a short arm I, is constructed to depress the loop K and lock the rods together. The loop K and its lever are carried upon the support-" ing-rod D. Straps h 72 may be employed to aid in retaining the parts in proper position, whilethe bores in the parts 13 B are extended and constructed to receive the free end of the rod H from the supplemental member and permit the same to be adjusted backward and forward thereon, as desired. The operation is obvious.
As before stated, the forms Amay be of any desired contour. WVhen the device is adapted for use as a skirt-hanger alone, the form shown is preferred. In this form the parts 13 B are of wood or equivalent material, provided with grooves b I), while the part A is of sheet metal or equivalent material constructed in the proper form and having its edges formed to engage with grooves Z) l), as shown in Figs. 2, 4E, and 6. The preferable shape of this form is that shown, wherein the same is extended in a lateral direction and inclined downwardly and outwardly, with the outer surface thereof slightly rounded.
After having thus described my improvement it is obvious that immaterial modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with suitable end forms each having a rounded lower portion and a straight approximately vertically disposed upper portion, a connecting-bar, a hanger associated with said bar, and a hook 0 carried by the hanger and arranged to cooperate with the straight portions of the forms to secure a skirt-band substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, oppositely-disposed end forms each provided with a bore Z), a sleeve inserted in said bore, and means for preventing independent rotation of said sleeve, and means associated with the rod adapted as the rod is turned to cause the forms to approach or recede; substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described,
oppositely-disposed end forms, each provided with a bore Z), a screw-threaded sleeve inserted in said bore, and means for preventing independent rotation of said sleeve, a rod screw-threaded in opposite directions at its ends engaging said sleeves and adapted when turned to cause the forms to approach or re cede; substantially as described.
4:. An end form for garment-hangers, comprising a block B, provided with grooves in its side surfaces, and a frame A extending around the end of said block in a horizontal direction and having portions engaging said grooves to retain the frame in place, substantially as described.
5. A garment-supporter comprising end forms having screw-threaded bores, a connecting-rod having screw-threaded ends engaging the bores of the forms and adapted when rotated to draw the same together or force them apart, a button 0 on the rod for rotating the rod, a hanger, and a loose connection between the hanger and the rod permitting said rod to rotate in the hanger when adjusting the end forms; substantially as described.
6. A garment supporter comprising a hanger, a rod connected to said hanger, and end forms at the ends of said rod each comprising a member B having a vertical surrounding edge, and a sheet-metal end frame A bent into rounded form and extending outwardly and downwardly from and around the member B, said frame A having a flange at its upper edge by which it is secured to the member B; substantially as described.
'7. A garment supporter comprising a hanger, a rod connected to said hanger, and end forms at the ends of said rod each comprising a member 13 having a vertical surrounding edge, aud a sheet-metal frame A bent into rounded form and extending outwardly and downwardly from and around the member B, said member B having a slot at a point below the upper surface thereof, and said frame A having a flange at its upper edge engaging the said slot to secure the frame in place; substantially as described.
8. A skirt-supporter comprising a hanger, a rod connected to said hanger, and end forms at the ends of said rod, each comprising a member having a vertical surrounding edge, and a sheet-metal end form A bentinto rounded form and extending outwardly and downwardly from and around the lower portion of said vertical edge of said member and secured thereto; substantially as described.
