CLOTHES-LINE REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,585, dated October 7, 1902.

Be it known that I, MARTIN H. KEMPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and useful Clothes- Line Reel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in clothesline reels, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device particularly adapted for holding clothes-lines.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device that is adapted to be carried by the person in such position that the line may be easily wound upon the reel and also unwound, as the occasion requires.
lVith these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and novel combination of parts, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being bad to the drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the arrangement of the handles, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the reel. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the manner of securing the two sections of the reel. Fig. 4 is a detail section taken about on the line 4 4c of Fig. 4. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the keeper for locking the reel to the frame. In practice I prefer to construct my device principally of stout wire, although it may be made of any suitable material. The drawings illustrate the main frame as constructed of wire, and, as shown, I employ a single strand A, bent at the middle, as at A, the ends being arranged parallel and bent back in the form of a compound curve, as shown at A and then bent to form straight horizontal portions A the ends finally terminating in outwardly and inwardly bent portions to form handles A, the extreme ends of each strand being united to the opposite strand at the junction of the horizontal and outwardly bent portions, as shown at A The horizontal portions of the strands are connected by brace-straps B, whose ends are curved around the strands A as shown at B, and at suitable points upon the said strands I mount V- shaped brackets O, which are also made of strap metal, each being formed of one piece bent at its middle to form eyes 0, in which the reel is held, the ends being formed into eyes or loops 0 that encircle the strands of the frame and are securely held thereto, as shown. These brackets are designed to support a reel D, also made of stout Wire and preferably of two pieces, each formed with a body portion d, bent to form loops (1 and the sides (1 the end of one side terminating in a pintle (Z and the other end in an eye d", that encircles the pintle andis securely held thereto by solder or other suitable means. It will be readily seen that as both sections of the reel are made substantially alike they may be easily connected to form the reel proper by inserting the pintles through the eyes of the sections, where they are secured. One of the pintles is extended to form a crank-handle E, by which the reel is revolved, the loops d forming sides to the reel, and thus preventing the laps of the line from slipping therefrom.
Upon one of the brackets O, I arrange a latch or keeper F, that is designed to be engaged to the reel and prevent it from turning, and consists of a body portion f, having one side bifurcated, and the tinesf f, formed by the said bifurcatiomare bent in opposite directions, so as to form a recess between them in which the side of the reel is held and by which the said reel is locked to the frame, the catch preferably being brought into use after the line has been Wound upon the reel and is so arranged that it may be readily turned around and out of the path of the'reel While the latter is being revolved.
In using my improvement the rest portion A is placed against the body of the user and is held in such position by grasping one of the handle portions at the outer end of the frame, and when thus positioned the reel will be held in front of the person, with the crankhandle in such position that it may be grasped and the reel revolved. It will thus be seen, and particularly by reference to Fig. 1, that a clothes-line may be easily and conveniently wound upon the reel and held from contact with the ground while being either suspended or collected, as in collecting the line one end thereof may be detached from its hook and secured to the reel when the latteris revolved as the person advances toward the opposite end of the line. Also by the use of my improvement the line is always free from tangles and may be carried about with but little inconvenience to the user.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the body portion formed of parallel portions which terminate at one end in a rest portion and at their opposite ends in handle-sections, brackets secured to the said parallel portions, a reel journaled in the brackets, and a latch carried by one of the brackets and adapted for engagement with the reel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the body portion made of a single length of wire bent to form parallel sections, one end thereof terminating in a curved rest portion, the ends of the wire being bent outwardly and inwardly to form handle portions, V-shaped brackets secured to the body portion and a reel journaled in the brackets and having a crank handle formed therewith, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a body portion made of a single length of wire bent at its middle to form parallel sections or strands, the ends thereof being bent outwardly and inwardly, the extreme ends being secured to the opposite strands of the body portion, brackets held upon the body portion a reel journaled in the brackets, a keeper carried by one of the brackets and adapted for engagement with the reel and brace-straps connecting the strands of the body portion, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a body portion formed of a single strand of wire bent to form parallel-arranged sections or strands,the ends being bent outwardly and inwardly to form handle portions, the extreme ends of each strand being connected to the opposite strand, the opposite end of the body portion being bent in the form of a compound curve, V- shaped brackets connected to the body portion and having their apexes terminating in eyes, a reel having pintles held in the said eyes, one of said pintles being extended to form a crank-handle, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of the body portion formed of a single length of wire bent at its middle to form parallel members or strands, each strand having a straight parallel portion a rest portion and handles, V-shaped brackets connected to the strands, a reel j ournaled in the brackets, a keeper arranged upon one of the brackets and adapted for engagement with the reel and brace-straps connecting the strands of the said body portion, substantially as shown and described.
