SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 710,220, dated September 30, 1902.

T0 all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES W. STIMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 68 West Fortieth street, New York, N. Y., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Stocking-Supporters to Corsets and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in means for attaching stocking-supporters to corsets and similar garments; and it consists in providing steels of corsets with laterallyprojecting portions provided with studs, from which the stocking-supporters may be suspended.
It is common at the present day to attach stocking-supporters to corsets and similar garments by means of a hook or clasp engaging the stud of the lower corset-clasp. The effect sought by this method of attaching the stocking-supporter is the depression of the abdomen of the wearer so as to give the wearer an erect figure; but in practice it is found that while this method of attaching the stocking-supporter does produce a depression of the abdomen on the medial line there is a tendency to bulging out of the abdomen and of the corresponding portions of the corset at the sides.
The object of my invention is to prevent such bulging at the sides while retaining the advantages derived from attaching the stocking-supporter to the front portion of the corset and at the same time to strengthen the lower edge of the corset. These objects I attain by providing the front steels of a corset or similar garment with laterally-projecting portions, formed preferably of metal, and the lower edges of which are preferably substantially parallel with and close to the lower edges of the corset and by providing these laterally-projecting portions with studs, to which stocking-supporters may be attached.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate one manner of carrying out my invention.
In the said drawings, Figure l shows a front View of the lower portion of a corset having stocking-supporters suspended therefrom in accordance with my invention. Fig.

2 is a detail front view of the lower portion of one of the front corset-steels. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a steel provided with 'a plurality of studs.
The front corset-steels l and 2 are constructed substantially the same as ordinary front corset-steels, except that each is provided at its lower end with a laterally-projecting portion 3, which may be separately formed but riveted to the steel, these proj ections 3 being provided withprojecting studs 4, from which stocking-supporters may be hung. The projecting portions 3 are covered by the material of the corset in the same manner as the front steels 1 and 2, and therefore these portions 3 are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The studs 4 project outward from the corset in the same manner and about to the same extent as the studs of the ordinary corset-clasps.
In Fig. l I have not shown the complete stocking-supporters, but only tapes 5 5, which form the upper portions of such supporters. Said tapes may be suspended from the studs 4 in any suitable manner; but it is most convenient to employ suitable clasps for the purpose, and in Fig. 1 I have shown clasps especially adapted for this use and which form the subject-matter of an application for Letters Patent filed by me-on December 5, 1901, Serial No. 84,760. Such clasps consist each of two-members 6 and 7, hinged together and provided with a suitable spring 8, and the form of their openings is such that in attaching the clasp to one of the studs 4 the clasp may be placed over the stud in such manner that the head projects through the larger portion of the opening of the clasp and then by pulling the clasp downwardly the neck of the stud is caused to pass into the smaller portion of the clasp and is there locked, so that the clasp may not be detached from the stud except by pressing its parts together by hand.
If desired, the laterally-projecting portions 3 of the steels may be provided with a plurality of studs, so that the stocking-supporters may be attached at different points, according to the preference of the wearer. This is illustrated in Fig. 3.
In the use of my invention since the pull of the stocking-supporters is received by the corset at about the points at which bulging IOD IOA
might occur if the stocking-supporter were suspended at the center, such bulging is ob- -viously prevented, and vthe projecting portions 3 of the steels so stiien the lower front portion of the corset that the abdomen of the wearer is depressed on the medial line as well as at the points at which the stocking-supporters are attached, so that this method of attachment produces the same tendency toward au erect ligure of the wearer as does the ordinary central method of attachment.
It is obvious that my invention is susceptible of various modications, and I do not limit myself to the particular construction and arrangement of the parts shown in the drawings.
1. As an article of manufacture, a corsetsteel adapted for use at the front of a corset or similar. garment and havinga laterally-projecting portion provided with means for attaching a stocking-supporter thereto.
2. As an article of manufacture, a corsetsteel adapted for use at the front of a corset and having at its lower end a laterally-projecting portion shaped to conform to the lower edge of a corset and provided with means for attaching a stocking-supporter thereto.
3. Corset-steels adapted for use at the front of a corset and each having a laterally-projecting portion provided with means for attaching a stocking-supporter thereto, in combination with the other parts of a corset or similar garment.
4. Corset-steels adapted for use at the front of a corset or similar garment and each provided at its lower end with a laterally-projecting portion provided with means for attaching stocking-supporters thereto, and shaped to conform to the lower edge of the corset, in combination with the other parts of a corset or similar garment.
