TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,871, dated September 30, 1902. Application filed November 25,1901. Serial No. 83,499. (No modeli) T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ARTHUR CLUKIEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the slab and bowl of a washstand with the pipe or trap leading therefrom. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper flared portion of the trap with the ring shown in Fig. 3 inserted therein. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said ring. Fig. 4 shows the means of attaching the bowl to the slab of a washstand. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the subject-matter of Fig. 2, showing the upper part of the pipe or trap with the ring projecting inwardly from said flared portion.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, and tight joint between the bowl of a washstand and the pipe or trap which carries off the waste water. Heretofore it has been customary simply to make a putty joint, except where a metal-plug connection with brass coupling and washer was used. It has been found in practice, however, that such putty joints will always leak when waste-pipes become clogged, and my device is therefore more satisfactory, as well as cheaper. It always permits of a yielding con nection being formed between the several parts, and this is an advantage, because it has been found that rigid joints are objectionable where the parts are exposed either to strain or to jars.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the slab of a washstand, 2 the bowl, and 3 the drain pipe or trap. The bowl is attached to the slab by means shown in the drawings, but made the subject-matter of a separate application for patent by me filed contemporaneously herewith. Said means of attachment consists, however, generally stated, of the expansionbolt 4, the angle-iron 5, and supporting-straps 6. In these constructions it has been customary to insert the horn 7 at the lower part annular groove 10 upon ring 11.

In my improved construction I provide an annular groove 10 in the upper flared portion 8 of the trap. Located within this annular groove 10 is the ring 11, which is made of rubber or other soft resilient material. The plate 9, borne by or connected to the horn 7, seats upon the ring 11, the outer edges 12 of said plate being of reduced thickness and downwardly deflected. The ring 11 at its lower portion seats upon and is firmly supported in place by the shoulder 15. After the plate 9 is placed in position on ring 11 the upper reduced edges 13 of the curved flange 11 are lapped over the edge 12 of the plate 9, thus securing the same within the After the edge 13 of the waste-pipe has been turned over plate 9 the annular collar 16, carried by the pipe 3, is engaged by the hooked ends of the supporting-straps 6, thus drawing the pipe 3 upwardly and compressing the ring 10 between the plate 9 and the shoulder 15 and causing it to expand against the annular groove 10.
It is obvious that my device may be used in the placing of sinks as well as Washstands and of other receptacles used in plumbing, the general features of which consist of a basin or bowl and a drain-pipe leading from underneath the same, such as urinals.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a trap, the combination of a pipe carrying a ring, a bowl provided with a horn, a plate connected to said horn and seated on said ring, said plate held in position on said ring by said pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a bowl provided with a horn, aplate formed integral with said horn, a pipe carrying a re silient ring, said plate seated on said ring and held in position by said pipe, and means for expanding said ring, substantially as described.
3. In a trap, the combination of a pipe, provided in its upperend with an annular groove, a ring seated in said groove, a bowl provided at its lower end with a horn, a plate connected to said horn, said plate seated on said ring and held in position by the turned edge of said pipe, substantially as described.
4. In a trap, the combination of a pipe, provided with a flange having reduced edges, a ring seated in said pipe, a bowl, a plate having reduced edges connected to said bowl and seated on said ring, said plate being held in position by said flange, and means for expanding said ring, substantially as described.
5. Ina trap, the combination of a pipe provided with an annular groove, a ring within said groove, a bowl provided at its lower portion with a horn, a plate having reduced downwardly-deflected edges connected to said horn, said plate positioned on said ring, said pipe provided with reduced edges adapted to overlap said plate and hold same in position, and means adapted to force said ring against said plate, substantially as described.
6. In a trap, the combination of a pipe carrying a ring, a bowl provided with a horn, means connected to said horn and seated on said ring, said means held in position on said ring by said pipe, and means connected to said pipe for raising the latter whereby the said ring is compressed by engagement with said first-named means, substantially as described.
