ELECTRIC-WIRE POLE.
SPECIFECATION' forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 709,554, dated September 23, 1902;
Application filed June 9, 1902- Serial No. 110,745. (No model.)
To all whom 231? nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, BERT MOFARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Navarre, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Wire Poles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making I a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the cover-plate. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation [5 showing the cover-plate side. Fig. 5 is a view showing the opposite side from that illustrated in Fig. 4.
, The present invention has relation to elec trio-wire poles especiallydesigned to support in proper elevation telegraph, telephone, and other electric wires; and it consists in the peculiar construction and novel arrangement hereinafter described, andparticularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings,1 represents the pole proper, which is formed of a length to hold in proper elevation the wire or wires designed to be supported, and, as shown, the pole is formed with three integral sides or faces or what may he termed a channel-bar. In the drawings I have illustrated the pole formed 5 integral throughout its entire length; but, if
desired, the pole proper may be form ed in sections and the sections united together by rivets or otherwise, a sufficient n umber of sections being united together to produce a pole of the desired length. This feature is not illustrated, as it is common to unite sections together to produce a structure of the desired length. The pole proper is provided with the desired number of bars or rungs 2, which are 5 for the purpose of providing a means for reaching the top of the pole, said rungs being properly spaced from each other to produce what might be termeda ladder.
For the purpose of preventing any displaceqo ment or interference with the various wires carried by the pole the cover-plate 3 is provided, which cover-plate is formed of such a length that it will prevent persons from climbing to the top of the pole, this object being very desirable, inasmuch as it prevents any injury being done to the wires by evil-inclined persons. The cover-plate 3 is provided with pins 4, which pins are seated in suitable apertures 5, formed in the edges of the side members of the pole 1, said pins and apertures being for the purpose of sustaining the cover-plate and holding the same in the posi tion illustrated in Fig. i.
To the pole 1 is securely attached in any convenient and well-known manner the bolt or bar 6, the outer end of which is provided with the head 7, which head is provided with the aperture 8. The cover-plate 3 is provided with an aperture 9, which aperture is so located and formed of such a size that when thecover-plate 3 is placed in proper position the head 7 will extend beyond the outer face of the cover-plate 3 and provide a meansfor properly connecting a padlock, such as 10, which padlock when properly locked will prevent the cover-plate from being removed except by parties having a proper key to unlock the padlock. It will be understood that after the padlock has been released and removed the cover-plate 3 is free to be removed and expose for use the bars or rungs 2.
It will of course be understood that suitable notches, such as 11., are to be formed in the top or upper end of the pole 1 to assist in holding in proper position the crossbars 12. In the drawings but one cross-bar is illustrated; but it will be understood that any desired number of bars may be provided, reference being had to the number of wires to be carried by the pole.
It will of course he understood that the pole is to be formed of metal and of sufficient thickness to give the desired strength.
For the purpose of providing a means for assisting in removing the coverlate 3 the lower portion of the cover-plate is provided with the aperture 13, said aperture being for the purpose of inserting a hooked bar or other tool to pull the cover-plate away from the pole.
For the purpose of forming a pole that will be light, and at the same time reducing the amount of metal used, the sides of the pole may be provided with elongated openings,
such as 14; but as to this it is simply a matter of judgment and they form no particular part of the present invention. If in the event the top of the pole is formed of metal too thin to form grooves for the wire-supporting bars, a notched plate, such as 15, maybe provided and the plate attached to said pole by a suit-able connecting-bolt, such as 17.
The pins for supporting the insulating-caps 18 are provided with the heads 16, which heads are seated into the cross-bars 12 and secured by suitable rivets or bolts.
For the purpose of closing the bottom or lower end of the pole l the plate 19 may be connected by rivets or otherwise, said plate and lower end being intended to go into the ground.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture a pole for electric wires formed of metal and provided with integral flanges and open upon one of its sides, rungs or bars secured to the flanges of the pole, a cover-plate removably attached to the pole and located over all or part of the rungs or bars, and means for securely holding the cover-plate in fixed relative position with the pole, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A pole for electric wires provided with an open side, rungs secured to the pole, a bar BERT MCFARREN.
