CHARLES O. LEE, OF WOODLAND, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T GEORGE o. WEEE,
OF SAME PLACE.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,461, dated March l, 1887.
Application filed August 6, 1886.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodland, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is My invention relates to fences, pens, floodgates, and similar structures which are composed of uprights or beams and bars, or rails in certain peculiar and novel features of con struction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure I is a side elevation of a combined board and rail fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isaside view of a dood-fence, also constructed according to my invention. Fig. 3 illustrates two forms of my improved attachment in detached condition.
In the said drawings, A designates one of my improved attachments in the form for attaching boards to the posts of fences, or the uprights of pens, coops, te. This attachment is formed of iron, either malleable, cast, or Wrought, or of other suitable metal for casting, such as brass, bronze, &c. The attachment is composed of a base or botto1n,ra, of suitable length and thickness for the purposes to which it is applied, having an upturned end, a', extending at right angles to the base a, and having two or more holes, a2. The base or body a is also extended upward at its sides a3, which also lie at right angles to the said base or body.
The attachment A is virtually identical in construction with the attachment A, but the sides a of attachment A are curved or rounded to conform to the shape of rails to which they are applied.
The attachment A is secured firmly in place upon the posts G or beam D, as the case may be, by means of staples or any other preferred Serial No. 210,225. (No model.)
form of securing devices, and the ends of they boards or rails rest upon the bases a, said 5o rails orboards being confined :in position by the sides a3. When used to secure the bars to a Hood-gate, nails, pins, or other suitable attaching devices, d, may be passed through suitable aligned openings in the sides a3 and 55 the ends of the bars, in order to prevent said bars fromleaving the attachments. By virtue of these improved attachments the full length of the boards or rails is taken advantage of, and the posts are not weakened by cutting away, as heretofore. The fence can be built perfectly straight, and fouror more sections of fencing can be attached to one post without weakening it.
A further advantage of this invention is that any panel of a fence may be quickly converted into a gate, as shown in Fig. l, by simply securing two or more crossbars, E, upon the rails or boards, so as to hold them to gether, whereby the entire panel may be lifted 7c off of the posts or set thereon, so as to open or close the space between said posts after the fashion of a gate. These attachments may be used'upon either plain or ornamental fences, or other structures, and may be of any ornamental appearance, as desired.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a trunk with an open socket-such as A-to receive horizontal brace-rails, no1' to provide a fence the posts of which have open sockets on 8o their opposing sides; and I do not therefore claim such devices broadly, but confine inyself to the particular construction pointed out in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what 8 5 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improvement in fences, the combination of the xed uprights or posts C and sockets A, rigidly affixed to opposing sides of the 9o posts, and having the integral base, the parallel vertical sides, and a vertical end piece, leaving one open upper side and front end, the horizontal bars fitted at their ends in the xed sockets and resting on and against the base and sides thereof, the vertical rails E, rig- 5 connected to the sockets, and can be simultaidly affixed to and connecting the horizontal bars, andthe transverse pins passing through the sides of the socket and the ends of the horizontal bars, whereby the bars are rmly In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in x0 presence of two witnesses.

neously lifted out of the samewvhen the trans- \Vitnesses: f versekpins are removed, substantially as de- C. A. HOUGH, scribed, for the purpose set forth. G. A. WERD.
