UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
CHARLES H. WVHEATON, OF IOLA, KANSAS.
LEAF FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,529, dated September 23, 1902.
Application filed March 12, 1902. Serial No. 97,891. (No model.)
To all whom it Tron/y concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. WHEATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaves for Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in leaves for books, and more especially to leaves for lodgers used in banks, and has for its object to facilitate the transfer of the balance [5 from one side of a leaf to the other, so thatit will not be necessary to keep turning the leaf backward and forward to ascertain the amount of the balance on the side of the leaf which has been balanced up while making entries on the other side.
My invention consists in a leaf constructed as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of one side of a leaf embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a view of the opposite side with the edge of the leaf folded to the right; Fig. 3, a bottom edge View of the same.
In the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote like parts throughout the several Views, A represents a leaf prepared in the usual manner to receive the names of the several depositors; B, my improved ledgerleaf, which may be ruled in any desired man- 5 ner. In thisinstance I have shown it as provided on one side 0 with a column a. for transfer-balance and check, deposit, and balance columns I), c, and d, respectively, and on the opposite side D with check, deposit, and balo ance columns 6, f, and g, respectively. Near the outer edge the leaf B is creased on the line E between the last deposit-column c and the last balance-column d, and the portion F, containing said balance-column cl, is adapted to be turned to the right and folded on the line E and turned onto the opposite side D of the said leaf B.
In use the days balances on the side 0 of the leaf B are carried out to the last balancecolumn d and then the edge F of the leaf containing said last balance column is turned to the right and onto the opposite side D of the said leaf, thus carrying the balance from side 0 to the opposite side D in plain view for the next days business and in proper relation to the names entered on leaf A and 0bviating the necessity of turning the leaf backward and forward to ascertain the balances on the side of the leaf that has been balanced up.
The leaves 13 may be bound together in any manner desired and may be made any size required.
I do not wish to limit the use of my invention to bank-books, as it may be used for other purposes wherever successive entries are to be made following a list of names Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is- A leaf for books having on one side an appropriately-designated balance-column at its right-hand outer edge, a vertical crease atthe left thereof, said edge containing the balancecolumn designed to be turned to the right and folded on the line of said crease onto the opposite side of the leaf, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. WHEATON.
