CHARLES OLEVES RICHARDSON, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE LOUISVILLE LITHOGRAPI-IIO COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,547, dated April 29, 1890.
Application filed October 24, 1889. Serial No.327,992. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CLEVES RICH- ARDSON, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Books; and I do hereby declare the follo win g to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper- 1o tains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in check-books.
Hitherto checks have been made with the ruled lines for deposits 011 the back of the stub; but this arrangement necessitated turning the stub part over every time one wished to ascertain what had been deposited, and then subtracting what had been drawn out in order to determine the balance in the bank.
The obj eot of my invention is to get everything on one page, as shown in the drawing, and bring forward a net balance at the foot of each page.
\(Vith this end in view my invention con- 2 5 sists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a fac-simile of a page from my improved check-book.
A A represent the checks, and B B the stubs. These are separated, in the usual manner, by perforations, which admit of their being torn off, as desired. The check portion forms no part of my present invention; but
attention is called especially to the stubs or portion of the leaf which is left in the book after the checks are removed. This portion is ruled, as illustrated, at each side with several parallel vertical lines. The lines at the left are for the deposits, as indicated in large letters, Deposit, above line 03 a: at the top, and the lines atfithe right are headed in a similar way by the word Checks, so that instead of having the deposits on one side of the stubs and the amount of the checks on the otherboth are placed, as above described,
on the same side to facilitate in the reckoning of the balance. A line y y is drawn at the bottom, and opposite the word Balance the balance is placed. Between the columns of lines for deposits and check the blanks are left for the number, date, and amount of check, as is customary, and above this portion of the stubs the words Amount brought forward are placed, to indicate the points in 5 5 the deposit and check columns where the amount brought forward from the preceding leaf is placed.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement: of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
I-Iavin g fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A check-book having stubs to which the checks are attached, the stubs having spaces on their front faces for the deposits and amounts of checks, substantially as set forth.
2. A check-book having lines for the deposits and amount of checks on the right and left sides of the front faces of the stubs, substantially as set forth.
3. A check-book the stub portion of which has deposit and check columns on the right and left side of the front face thereof, designated by the words Deposits and Checks, and places for the Amount brought forward and the Balance all onone side of the stub, as indicated by these words, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subserib- 8 5 ing witnesses.
CHARLES CLEVES RICHARDSON.
