fitte .gebaute referat in in that tetttrt @mit zint making mi nf the lsmite.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MOSES B. WRIGHT, of Meriden, county of New Haven, and Statc'of Connecticut, have invented certain new'and useful .Improvements .inA Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to vthe accompanying drawings, and to the letters oi' reference marked thereon, in whichq Figure 1 is a side elevation. l l, 'Y
The object of this invention is to combine, in a simple and economical manner, the advantages of an open light with those of a hand or pocket-lantern, so thatv either the one or the other may be used, as occasion requires.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use-my invention. I will now describe its construction and operation. y
A represents the reservoir or body of the lamp. B is the wick apparatus, which is constructed in the ordinary manner. Said apparatus `isconnected to the neck of lamp A by means of the perforated metallic band d, which serves to prevent a sudden influx of air to the bottom perforations of the burner, thus keeping the tlame steady even in the mostboisterous wind. C represents the chimney, which is secured to the hinged Arim e in the usual manner. f is a handle secured to the perforated metal band or collar cl just beneath the catchyspring` 'qi Thus it will be observed that when the index-finger is graspingthe handlef, the thumb easily operates the catch-spring g. fl) is a. perforated metal band or cap secured at the top of the chimney. This cap is provided with a metal top, a, which is likewisevperforated, as seen in the drawings. I would here remark that the hing-ed rim a is not provided witha cupola, as in the ordinary burner, but simply with a circular ange upon which the chimney rests; thus the chimney neverbecomes too Warm to be endangered by exposure to rain. l l
The advantages of this invention are apparent, as, with a trilling expense beyond the cost of the cheapest lamp, a hand or pocket-lantern may be combined.
What I claim, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is
The perforated metal cap D, top a, chimney C, shell B,'and perforated metal band d, all combined in thc manner substantially as set` forth. v
i In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I hereby aix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
l MOSES B. WRIGHT.
Witnesses GEO, W. SMITH, HENRY WRIGHT.
