Be it known that I, HARRY E. BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in End-Fasteners for Perforated Music-Sheets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others to skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in perforated music sheets for use principally with that class of instruments or attachments for mechanically or otherwise playing pianos, organs, or other musical instruments; and the invention relates more particularly to a perforated music-sheet provided with a novel form/and construction of end fastener for attaching the end of the sheet to a fastening device upon a roller upon which the music-sheet is to be wound.

The primary object ofthis invention, therefore, is to provide a music-sheet of the character hereinabove stated with a novel construction of end-fastenerhaving an enlarged 0 and broad and strong member arranged upon and across the narrow end portion of the music-sheet at the weakest point of the said sheet to avoid the possibility of this portion of the sheet from cracking or tearing, and

5 thereby rendering the sheet useless.

A further object of this invention is to reinforce the fastening-loop, as well as the joint or connection of the end-fastener with that portion of the music-sheet to which it is se- 0 cured,bypastingorotherwisesecuringapiece of paper or the usual label,which indicates the name of the piece with which the music-sheet is to be used, directly over the said joint or connection, whereby the possibility of the 5 unavoidable folding of the parts at the joint and the consequent cracking or tearing across the said joint or connection is positively prevented.

The invention therefore consists in the novel combination, with a perforated musicsheet, of the novel construction of end-fastener therefor, as hereinafter more particularly described.

In the usual forms and constructions of endfasteners as heretofore made and employed with perforated musicsheets the fastener was made with a pair of narrow tongues or laps arranged upon and then pasted against the opposite faces of the tapered or pointed end portion of the sheet. This mode of attachment at the weakest part of the musicsheet has this serious objection that with constant use the music-sheet will soon crack or tear at the parts where the fastener is joined to the sheet, and the said music-sheet will in consequence thereof soon become utterly useless. With my novel arrangement and construction of the various parts of the end-fastener as hereinafter set forth these difficulties and defects are all fully overcome and a useful, cheap, simply-constructed, and elficient fastener is produced, whereby the music-sheet may be used for a long time without deterioration.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a face and rear view, respectively, of the tapered or pointed end portion of a perforated music-sheet provided with an end fastener which embodies the novel features of my present invention; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the said parts; and Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of the two parts, respectively,which are employed in my novel construction of end-fastener.

Similar numerals ofreference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings, 1 indicates the usual form of perforated music-sheet, which is made of paper or any other suitable material practical for the purposes of perforated musicsheets.

The reference character 2 indicates the end portion of the music-sheet, which is usually 5 made tapering 01' pointed by having the edges 3 and AL inclining toward each other and meeting in a point.

My novel form and construction of end-fastener is indicated by the reference-numeral too 5, and the same consists, essentially, of an enlarged and broad member 6, preferably made of a strong fabric of any suitable texture. This member 6 is made with tapering edges 7 and 8, which correspond to the inclined edges 3 aud t, respectively, of the end portion 2 of the music-sheet, and 9 indicates a squared end of the said member 6. At or near the point where the two tapering edges 7 and 8 of this member 6 are about to meet the said member is formed with a piece 10, which terminates in a tongue or lap 11 andis arranged around a fastening-ring 12 or other s'uitablemeans of attachment to a roller upon which the music-sheet is to be wound.

The complete end-fastener 5 is secured in its operative position upon the end portion of the perforated music-sheet in the manner illustrated in the drawings, so that the memher 6 is arranged directly upon the lower pointed portion and upper face of the musicsheet, with the tongue or lap 11 arranged against the back of the said pointed portion of the music-sheet, a reinforcing-strip 16 being arranged between the opposite surfaces of the pointed end portion of the music-sheet and the said member 6 and tongue 11, re-

spectively, of the said end-fastener, as clearly illustrated in said Fig. 3 of the drawings. Thus a suitable loop 13 is provided by the .said strip 16 and the tongue or lap 11 for the reception of the said ring 12, as illustrated, which is also thereby provided with additional strength, owing to such arrangement of the reinforcing member 16, as shown.

Owing to the enlarged and broad construction of the member 6 and its being fitted directly upon and entirely covering the lower pointed part of the end portion 2 of the music-sheet l and the said member 6 being made of a fabric of strong texture, it will be clearly evident that this portion of the music-sheet, which is naturally the weakest part thereof, cannot tear nor become damaged by cracking, as is usually the case with the arrangement and constructions of the end-fasteners now employed with perforated music-sheets. With all sheets of this character it has been the custom to attach a label bearing the name of the piece to be performed and other printed matter thereon to the said end portion of the music-sheet. This label is indicated in the drawings by the reference character 14, and in the present construction while attaching thelabelIarrangeitin such a manner that its portion 15 is secured directly above the said squared end 9 of the member 6. Thereby the joint or connection between the member 6 of the end-fastener 5 and the end portion of the music-sheet to which said end-fastener has been'attached is entirely covered and reinforced and fully overcoming the possibility of the unavoidable folding of these parts during the winding and unwinding of the musicsheet upon the receiving-roll of the apparatus with which the sheet is employed and also preventing any cracking or tearing of the sheet across the said joint or connection, as will be clearly understood. In lieu of the employment of such label I may use a plain piece of stiff paper or other suitable material as a reinforcing member across the said joint or connection, as will be evident.

The simplicity of construction and the usefulness and many advantages obtained by the use of my novel construction of end-fastener are clearly evident from the previous description of my invention and from the drawings which illustrate the same.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the parts without departing from the scope of my invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various parts as described in the specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of any of the said parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination, with a perforated music-sheet, having an end portion provided with tapering edges, of an end-fastener, comprising, an enlarged member having tapering edges corresponding to the tapering edges of said music-sheet, said enlarged member being adapted to be arranged on one side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, a tongue extending from said enlarged member, said tongue being bent to form a loop and adapted to be arranged against the other side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, and a reinforcing-strip placed between the said enlarged member and the tongue of the end-fastener and the respective surfaces of the end portion of the said In usic-sheet, all of the said parts being secured in place, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with a perforated music-sheet, and a reinforcing means, such as a piece of paper or a label, attached to the said sheet, of an end-fastener, comprising, an enlarged member adapted to be secured on one side of the said end portion of the musicsheet, a squared end 9 forming a part of said enlarged member, over which a portion of the said reinforcing means is arranged and secured, and a tongue extending from said enlarged member, said tongue being bent over to form a loop and secured to the other side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combination, with a perforated music-sheet, and a reinforcing means, such as a piece of paper ora label, attached to the said sheet, of an end-fastener, comprising, an enlarged member adapted to be arranged on one side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, a squared-end 9 forming a part of said enlarged member, over which a portion of the said reinforcing means is arranged, and a tongue extending from said enlarged member, said tongue being bent into a loop and adapted to be arranged against the other side of the said end portion of the music-sheet,

and a reinforcing-strip 16 placed between the said enlarged member and the tongue of the end-fastener and the respective surfaces of the end portion of the said music-sheet, all the said parts being secured in place, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The combination, with a perforated music-sheet, having an end portion provided with tapering edges, and a reinforcing means, such as a piece of paper or a label, attached to said end portion, of an end-fastener, comprising, an enlarged member having tapering edges corresponding to the tapering edges of said music-sheet, said enlarged member being adapted to be secured on one side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, the said tapering edges of said end-fastener terminating directly upon the tapering marginal edges of the music-sheet, whereby said edges are reinforced to prevent curling and tearing of the music-sheet, a squared end 9 forming a part of said enlarged member, over which a portion of the said reinforcing means is arranged and secured, and a tongue extending from said enlarged member, said tongue being adapted to be bent over to form a loop and secured to the other side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The combination,with a perforated music-sheet, having an end portion provided with tapering edges, and a reinforcing means, such as a piece of paper or a label, attached to said end portion, of an end-fastener, comprising,an enlarged member having tapering edges corresponding to the tapering edges of said music-sheet, said enlarged member being adapted to be arranged on one side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, a squared end 9 forming a part of said enlarged member, over which a portion of the said reinforcing means is arranged and secured, and a tongue extending from said onlarged member, said tongue being bent to form a loop and adapted to be arranged against the other side of the said end portion of the music-sheet, and a reinforcing-strip placed between the said enlarged member and the tongue of the end-fastener and the respective surfaces of the end portion of the said music-sheet, all of the said parts being secured in place, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
