Various forms of devices have been used for this purpose hitherto, but the general practice has been to make use of a metal ring or clip secured to the end of tee sheet. Reference numeral 1 is applied to the note sheet, the end of which is trimmed in the customary manner with the margins 2, 3 being; cut as is usual at an angle of degrees or thereabout to the sides of the note sheet. and leaving the short square end i at the center.

5 designates a section of preferably woven material such as tape, which may be of any convenient width, and of a length dependent upon its width, but suflicient to permit its being bent up at th ends and to form a securing means as hereinafter described. This member 5 of tape or like material has a coating 6 of glue or cement or like ma terial applied thereto on one surface, and such material may either be freshly applied at the time of assembly of the parts, or it may be. applied to-the tape or like material and permitted to harden before the latter is cut into lengths, and afterward softened by the application of a suitable softening agent at the time of the assembly of the parts.

Reference numeral 7 is applied to the attaching means proper, which, stated, is of a soft material and may be a piece of ordinary cord, and it may be circular in cross section, as such cord is customarily manufactured, or it may have any desired form of cross section.

In assembling the parts, the securing means 5, with freshly applied or previously applied and softened cementitious material 6 thereon, is placed across the end of the sic roll sheet 1, the edge thereof register or substantially registering with the extreme end 4 of the sheet 1, and the projecting corners 8 and 9 thereof are bent along the marginal lines 2 and 3 of the sheet 1 backward upon the reverse side of the sheet 1, the portions 11, ll of the cord or other attaching material 7 being inserted along the marginal lines :3 and 3 of the sheet and between the material of the sheet 1 and the bent over end portions 8 and 9 of the securing means 5, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. Additional glue or other cementing material may be applied, if desired, but ordinarily the coating 6 ap plied to the securing means 5 will be ample. The parts having been arranged in this position, are subjected to pressure in a suitable press, thus firmly securing together the sheet 1, securing means 5, the tabs or turned over portions 8 and 9 thereof and the portions 11, 11 of the attaching means 7 and also resulting in flattening out and broadening the sections 11, 11 of the cord or other attaching means 7 and making a thin fiat structure of great strength. The loop 10 formed in the cord or other attaching means 7 is permitted to project centrally beyond the end of the note sheet and the securing means, and by means of this loop the end of the note sheet can be readily and co veniently attached to the hook of the takeup spool, or suitable means can be applied thereto for holding the roll in its rolled up condition, and it will be seen that the entire structure, while sufficiently flexible for all. purposes, is nevertheless somewhat stiff and the operator by grasping the end of the sheet 1, reinforced in the manner described, can readily and conveniently place the loop 10 over the hook or other attaching means upon the takeup spool.

While I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the precise form shown is for purposes of illustration only and that changes may be made within the scope of my claims without departing from my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

1 claim as my invention:

1. In a music roll, the combination of a sheet having its ends cut away at the sides at substantially equal angles,'an attaching means of soft material, and means for securing said attaching means to said sheet extending across the end thereof and folded over to embrace both faces thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a music roll, the combination of a sheet having its ends cut away at the sides at substantially equal angles, a section of soft material disposed along the cutaway edges and projecting to form a central loop, and means for securing said soft material to said sheet along the edges thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a music roll, the combination of a sheet having its ends cut away at the sides at substantially equal angles, a cordextending along the cutaway edges of said sheet and projecting beyond the end thereof, and securing means infolding said cord and the end of said sheet, the portion of said cord so infolded being flattened out, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4:. In a music roll, the combination of a sheet having its ends cut away at the sides at substantially equal angles, a section of soft cord disposed along a portion of said cutaway edges at the back of said sheet, and projecting centrally to form a loop, and reinforcing means extending across the end of said sheet and bent over at the rear face thereof to inclose the said cord, all of said parts being firmly emented together, sub stantially and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a music roll, the combination of a sheet having its end cut away at the corners at substantially equal angles and cut square across at the extreme end, a section of soft cord disposed along a portion of said cutaway edges at the back of said sheet, and projecting centrally to form a loop between the cord and the square cut end portion, and astrip of tape extending across the end of the sheet in front and bent over at the rear face thereof to inclose said cord, all of said parts being firmly cemented together, sub- Goples of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Iateats, Washington, D.
