To ALL WHOM IT MAY ooNCERN:
Be it known that I, LUTHER M. SIMS, of Lincoln, in the conntj7 oi'Logan, and in the State of Illinois, have invented Icertain new and useful Improvements in Locking Mail-Bag; and do'bereby declarethat the following V is a full, clear, and exact deseription thereof, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
' In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification,'A represents a mail=bng, which'is constructed generally very'similarlyto those in common use. A ap, a, covers the 'opening or mouth ofthe bag. This ap tapers, as seen in red lines, toward its end, and has upon its end an iron or-mctal 'l1asp. C represents a metallic case or box, which has its edges riveted to the bag' on that side over which the Hap turns; This case is suiciently raised from the side of tile bag, vwhen secured in its place', that the flap d. can pass under it between it and the bag. The case C is made in the shape of the ap a, and has at its lower end an orifice through which the hasp IB passes to ca'tuli over the staple E. D represents 'the handle of the bag, which is secured to the flap a.' The case C gives ample protection to tle mouth of the bag and the Hap a. By this arrangement, mail-bags can be opened and closed much more expeditiously than they can by the 'plan now in use. The case C, I propose to cast of brass, so thatit will not break or bend easily.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa
The case C, constructed and used with the bag and its ap a, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention, I have. hereunto set my hand-"this thday of September, 1867.
LUTHER M. SIMS.
