IMPROVED BLAGKING- BOX HOLDER.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, THOMAS KING PAYSON, of the city, county, and State of New York,-have invented a new and-useful Improvement in Blocking-Box Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top view or plan of a blacking-box holder with blacking-box therein, constructed according to my improvement, and showing the samein its open condition, and I Figure 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

My invention consists in ablacking-box holder composed of two flanged rings hinged together, and provided with set-screws for adjusting and retaining the box in one part and thelid in the other, in suchrelative position as to insure the perfect closing of the lid on the box when shut, and whereby boxes of difi'erent sizes may be.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the box-holder, cast or formed in one piece, with the handle 6. Hinged at a to the holder on its handle side is a lid-carrier, B, provided with a thumb-piece, d, in its rear, and formed, say, with a step, e. The'blacking-bo'x C and its lid Dlmay be secured in their respective holders (A and B) in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of set-screws f, whereby the same device or blacking-box holder will'serve to accommodate different sizes of boxes and their lids, and said b'oxe's'and lids be so relatively adjusted as, on shutting down the carrier B, the box will be covered by the lid. v I

To open the holder, it will only be necessary, with the thumb of the hand which grasps the handle I), to

press on the piece d, and so throw back the lid-carrier B till the step e strikes or rests on the handle, when the box will not only be opened, but said carrier or lid D held by it be made to act as a shield to protect the hand from being soiled on applying the brush to the blacking. By lifting or pressing on the piece din an opposite direction the-carrier and its lid are or may be closed.

Thus it will be seen that, both in the opening, closing, and use of the blacking-box holder, every protection against soiling generally is secured, while the closing of the carrier on the box, which may be done much more expeditiously than the lid is usually fitted thereon, keeps the blocking moist or from being dried up by exposure to the air.

What I here claim; and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The box-holder A, with its lid-carrier B, provided with set-screws f, or other equivalent means for securing the box and its lid and setting the same relatively to each other, also facilitating the accommodation of difierent sized boxes in the one holder, substantially as shown and described.
