Description
@with tara @anni @fitta J. B. JACKSON ANI) M. It. JACKSON, OF ROCHESTER, IOWA. Letters Patent No. 70,854, 'dated November 12, 1867.
MACHINE IOR SHRINKING TIRE.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known'that-we, J. B. JAcKsoN and M. R. JAcKsoN, ot Rochester, in the county of Cedar, and State of Iowa., have invented a new and improved Machine for Shrinking Tires, Etc.; and we d'o hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sido elevation.
Figure 2-is a section of a gripe-key.
Figure 3' is a perspective view of a gripe.
Figure 4 is o. plan.
Th same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is a bench, to the top of which the machine is fastened. B is the bed-plate of the machine, formed as A represented. C is a stationary jaw, fastened to the bed-piece by bolts, and D is a L'novable jaw, sliding longitudinally upon the bed-piece, between flanged guides on the side thereof. The sliding jaw I) is actuated by the Screw F, which passes through thetvertieal portion of the bed-plato B and p. stirrup, E, bolted to tbc movable jaw D. By turning this screw by means of a winch, or in any other convenient manner, the jaw D is moved towards or from the stationary jaw C, as desired. X represents a section of a tire, which rests upon the curved upper faces of the jaws C and D. For thopurpo'se of aifording a continuous bearing for the tire, the jaw D is constructed with a tongue, D", which tits into a socket, C1, in the opposite end of the jaw C. Cz and D2 are vertical sockets in the jaws respectively, to receive the stem of the gripes G, which hold the upper face of the tire, under the edges Gl. A horizontal slot is formed through the jaws at G3, and a corresponding slot through the stem of the gripes at G2, to receive the wedge-formed key H, which, being driven therein, draws down the gripe at G1 upon the tiro with a force suicicnt to hold it. The gripe rests upon a spring, I, which is placed at the base ofthe socket Cz or D2, which press the gripes upwards when the key is retracted, and prevent its escape. The tire, being properly heated, and secured to the jaws by means' of the gripes, may be shrunk by the action of the Screw F, as may be required.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The stationary jaw C, and movable jaw D, in .combination with the screw F, vgripes G, and keysl II, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose setA forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our nonies to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

M. R. JACKSON. Witnesses:
