BARREL HEAD FASTENING. t
` (Application filed Jan. 9, 1902.)
(Nq Model.)
BY ATTO YS w/msssfs ilinrTnn dTaTns FaTnNT @Trina EDWARD CROSSMAN SHEARS, 'OF LAKOTA, NORTH DAKOTA.
BARREL-HEAD FASTENING. y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,412, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed January 9, 1902. Serial No. 89,011. (No model.)
To all 'uf/2,0771, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CRossMAN SHEARS, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Lakota, in the county of Nelson and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Barrel-Head Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in barrel-head fastenings; and the object is to provide a head and fastenings that may be removed or inserted without breaking or otherwise damaging the barrel-staves, and, fur-v ther, to provide, in connection with a fastening, a means for attaching a seal.
I will describe a barrel-head fastening embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a plan view showing a barrelhead, showing fastenings embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line ma: of Fig. 1 and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3is a sectional detail showing the seal-attaching devices, and Figs. 4t and 5 are perspective views of interlocking plates employed.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a barrelsubstan tially of the usual construction, and the head consists of two members 2 3, the member 2 being in the form of a ring and engaging in the chime of the barrel, while the member 3 is arranged to engage in the ring portion. The wall ot the member 3 is inclined or beveled, as is also the inner wall of the ring member 2, and to provide a water and air tight joint I may employ a bushing 4: of cork or other material not affected by moisture or acids, such as vinegar.
the member 3 are the locking-plates G, de-
signed to engage the keeper-plates 5. The upper surfaces of the plates 6, which engage with the under surfaces of the plates 5, are
beveled or inclined, so that when the cover portion 3 is turned with the plates i underneath the plates 5 the said member 3 will be forced into tight connection with the ring member 2. For convenience in rotating the member 3 and for lifting it out of position I provide it with handles 7. For locking the head member 3 in position during transportation or the like I provide one of the plates 5 and its engaging plate 6 with upwardlyextended ends 8 9,Which are provided with openings to receive a sealing-wire lO, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a barrel-head fastening a ring-like meinber secured to a barrel, and a member removably engagingV with the ring-like member, locking-plates attached to the ring-like member, and plates attached to the removable member and adapted to engage the under sides of the first-named plates, the said plates secured to the removable member having inclined upper surfaces, one interlocking pair of plates having their ends turned upward and perforated to receive a sealing- Wire, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
EDWARD CROSSMAN SHEARS. lrVitnesses:
C. N. ERICH,
S. A. FLOREN.
