Description

N0. 708,37I. Patented Sept. 2, I902. H. C. LIPPS.
BED PAN DOVER.
(Application flied June 12, 1902.)
(No Model.)
UNITED TATES HELEN C. LIPPS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BED-PAN COVER.
SPECIFICATION form mg part Of Letters Patent NO. 708,371, dated September 2, 1902. Application filed June 12,1902. Serial No. 111,257. (No model.)
T on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HELEN O. LIPPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of' Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bed-Pan Covers, of which the following is a specification.
I'Ieretofore in the employment of bed-pans in hospitals and private sick-rooms it has been customary to cover the bed-pan after use and for removal from the presence of the sick with a towel or piece of fabric of some description, which at best was but a makeshift and unsanitary; and the object of my invention is to provide a cover of substantial character adapted for the purposes intended.
My invention is a new article of manufacture; and it consists of a cover adapted to fit and, if desired, remain upon the bed-pan and form to the outline of the bed-pan and entirely inclose the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 an inverted plan representing my improvement.
a represents the flat top, which is preferablyinclined, semielliptical, and tapering.
A skirt is connected to and depends from the edge of the cover, and the free edge 0 of the skirt normally occupies a horizontal plane. The part b of the skirt at one end is arranged vertical to the edge 0, and the part (Z of the skirt at the opposite end to the part b is at an obtuse angle to the free edge 0 and at an acute angle to the inclined fiat top a.
As will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 3, the portion of the top at the right hand of a vertical line is semi-elliptical, while the portion at the left hand of said imaginary vertical line is tapering, so that the intermediate portions fof the skirt taper or are inclined from the tapering portion of the top to the free edge cof the skirt, whilethe intermediate skirt portions 6 taper in a circular configuration from the part 61 of the skirt around to said imaginary verticalline. It will thus be seen that not only the top a but the skirt is of peculiar form, so as to closely surround,,fit,
and conformto the outline of the bed-pan and entirely close the same.
The inclined top a is provided with a central handle g for lifting the cover off or placing the same upon the bed-pan, and the cover is also provided with a perforated flap h, by which the same may be suspended when not required from a nail or other fastening device.
In placing the cover upon the bed-pan the part 61 of the skirt is first brought over the end of the pan and then gradually and progressively the cover is forced down upon'the pan, the part 5 coming last into position, and when the cover is in place the free edge 0 of the skirt comes down approximately or actually to the plane upon which the pan is supported or may rest. I prefer to make this cover of rubber-that is, of rubber fabric or of entire rubber. In either case the cover can be washed and kept cleanly and sanitary and the close fitting of the cover is advantageous and sanitary in use.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture a bedpan cover comprising a top and a skirt surrounding the top and joining the same at the edge thereof, the top being inclined to the free edge of the skirt and one end of the skirt being at an obtuse angle to the free edge of the skirt and the other end at a right angle85 thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a bedpan cover comprising a top and'a skirt surrounding the top and joining the same at the edge thereof, the top being inclined to the free edge of the skirt and one end of the skirt being at an obtuse angle to the free edge of the skirt, and the other end at a right angle thereto, and the cover at one end being semielliptical and at the other end being tapering so as to provide for the change in shape of the skirt from the obtuse angle at one end to the right angle at the other end in causing the bed-pan cover to surround and conform edge thereof, the top being inclined to the free edge of the skirt and one end of the skirt being at an obtuse angle to the free edge of the skirt and the other end at a right angle thereto, and a handle upon the cover for lifting and carrying the same, and a perforated flap h at one end of the cover for suspending the same from a fastening device, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a bedpan cover of india-rubber or similar material, comprising a top and a skirt surronnding the top and joining the same at the edge thereof, the top being inclined to the free edge of the skirt and one end of the skirt being at 15 an obtuse angle to the free edge of the skirt and the other end at a right angle thereto, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 5th day of June, 1902.
HELEN C. LIPPS.
