- P. w. MULLANY. TOOL FOR BANDING BOXES.
(Application filed Ndv. 15 1901.!

W'i'h esscs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE-.4
PATRICK WILLIAM MULLANY, OF AMBERG, VVISCO'NSIN.
TOOL FOR BANDING BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,161, dated September '2, 1902.
Application filed November 15, 1901. Serial No. 82,429. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I,PATRIoK WILLIAM MUL- LANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Amberg, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Tool for Banding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a tool for tightening bands aroundboxes and the like.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of the means employed for tightening bands around boxes and analogous receptacles and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient tool adapted to be readily engaged with a band and capable of enabling the latter to be tightened and held while it is being fastened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character which will also be capable of cutting a band of the required length.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the parts arranged for clamping a band. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the arrangement of the band-cutter.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a bar or member having a bifurcated outer end forming an opening for the reception of a lever or bar 2, which is pivoted in the opening of the bar or member 1 by a screw 3 or other suitable fastening device. The outer portion of the bar or member 2 is enlarged to form a head, which has a pair of diverging arms 4 and which is also provided with shoulders 5, arranged adjacent to the outer edges 6 of the bar or member 1 and cooperating with the same to form clamps for engaging a metallic strap or band. edges 6 are rounded, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the pivot is eccentrically arranged, and the said rounded edges form cams trated in Fig. 1, to open such spaces.
The
for engaging the strap or band. The strap or band is placed in the space at either side of the device, between the shoulders 5 and the rounded edges 6, while the handle portions of the members are brought together, as illus- After the strap or band has been placed between one of the shoulders 5 and the adjacent cam edge 6 the diverging tapering arms 4 are placed against the box or other receptacle to fulcrum the tool thereon, and the handle portion of the bar or member 1 is swung away from the handle portion of the bar or lever 2, whereby the device is caused to grip firmly the strap or band. The device also forms a lever for enabling the said strap or band to be stretched tightly across or around a box or other receptacle, and it will securely hold the strap or band while it is being nailed or otherwise secured in place. The tapering arms are adapted to be partially embedded in a box, and they also provide a broad base or support for the device to prevent the same from tilting to either side.
One side of the fork or bifurcation of the bar or member 1 is preferably formed by a removable steel plate 8, secured by screws or other suitable fastening devices to the adjacent portion of the said bar or member 1 andadapted to cooperate'with a cutting edge 9 of the bar or lever 2. The bar or lever 2 is beveled at one side at 11 adjacent to the slot or V bifurcation, and it is preferably tempered at It will be seen that the device is exceed in gly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily engaged with a strap or band, and that it,is capable of being readily and effectively fulcrumed on a box I or analogous receptacle at any point to enable the band to be stretched to the desired tension. It will also be apparent that the device is adapted to cut a strap or band and that the forked head of the bar or lever forms a broad fulcrum to prevent the device from tilting laterally when stretching a band.
What I claim is A tool for banding boxes comprising a bar or member 1 provided at one end with a recess, a steel plate detachably secured to the bar or member 1 adjacent to the said recess and provided with a cutting edge at one side and having a cam edge at its outer end, said bar or member 1 bei ng also provided with a terminal oameedgeiocatesd opposite the cam edge of the detachable plate, and the bar or member 2 pivoted between the plate and the =lsafoimember 1 and provided at the inner my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in 25 the presence of two witnesses.
