Be it known that I, FRANCIS JAMES KEIs, a citizen ofthe United States,'residing at Watervliet, in the county of Albany'and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Milk-Dippers, of which the following is a specification.
This ninvention relates `generally to milkdippers, and more particularly to one having a spring-actuated cover which is normally closed.
Milk-dippers as ordinarily constructed comprise a cup and a long handle, by means of which milk is dipped'up from the can and poured into the bottle or measure. Oups as a rule are quite large and cannot be filled to their limit, for the reason that in removing the dipper from the can and emptying the same it frequently happens that considerable quantity of the milk is spilled. For this reason the dippers are never employed for measuring a quantity of milk.
The object of my invention is to overcome this objection and provide a dipper which can be employed as a measure and which can be filled to its full capacity and carried about without spilling any of the contents.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specication, Figure lisa perspective view showing a milk-dipper constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 is a detail sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the top portion of the can and the manner of hinging the cover. Fig. 4 is a sectional top plan. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a detail of construction. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view illustrating the lower portion of the handle.
In carrying out my invention I employ a cupordipper A, having a long handle B rigidly secured thereto, said handle having an opening B produced therein adjacent to its lower end, the metal being punched out and turned back, as shown at B2, providing ears between which the projecting portion C of the cover C is pivoted, the pivot -bolt C2 passing through said projection and through the ears B2, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3.
A rod D is pivotally connected to the end of the projection C', the upper end of said rod being pivotally connected to the links E,which links in turn are pivotally connected to the lower ends of the levers F, which cross each other and are pivoted to the handle at F. The pin D', which serves to pivotally connect the rod D and links E, works in a slot D2, produced inthe handle, and is formed with an eye D3, to which is attached the lower end of a coil-spring G,the upper end of said spring being fastened at the upper end of said slot, as most clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. The purpose of this spring is to normally hold the rod D up, thereby maintaining a constant pressure upon the end of the projection C',
Vthereby holdingthe cover C firmly closed upon the top of the cup or dipper A. In order to secure a tighter joint between the cover and top of dipper, I produce a groove C3 in the inner face of the cover and arrange a packing-ring'C.
In order to provide against leakage at the rear end of the cup or dipper, I arrange an -inwardly-projecting plate H, which is fastenedto the rear side of the cup adjacent to its upper edge and extends the entire width of the handle. Thisplate H has a connecting-plate H', which closes the space between the plate and dipper, `and thereby prevents liquid passing between the plate and dipper. The cover is formed with a rentrant groove ,05, which also contains the packing C, said .the cover is necessarily raised or opened and the cup or dipper can then be filled to its full extent, thereby measuring the quantity to be emptied. As soon as the cup or dipper is filled the lever-handles are released, and the springs will immediately return the cover to its closed or normal position, and the dipper IOO can be carried to the point desired Without danger of spilling the contents. When the dipper or cup is to be emptied, the lever-handles are again pressed, opening the cover, and the milk can be poured therefrom the same as from an ordinary cup or dipper.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the kind described comprising a dipper or cup and a handle having an opening near its lower end, a cover having a projection extending through said opening and pivoted therein, and a spring-actuated rod connected to the projection and carried by the handle, and means for operating the spring actuated rod, substantially as described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a clipper and handle, said handle having an opening near the bottom, the cover having a rear projection extending through the opening and pivoted therein, the rod connected thereto, the spring-actuated levers pivoted upon the handle and pivotally connected to the said rod, substantially as described.
3. A device of the kind described, comprising a cup or dipper, a handle attached thereto, the pivoted cover having a groove provided With a packing-ring, said cover having a rearwardly-projecting extension, a rod attached to said extension, the cross-levers pivoted to the handle, the links for connecting the levers and rod, a spring attached to the said rod' at its upper end, the opposite end of said spring being connected to the handle and the supplemental springs attached at one end to the handle and at the other end to the rear extension adjacent to the lower end of the handle, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a cup or dipper, having a curved plate arranged upon the inside thereof, ot' a pivoted cover, having a groove, provided with a packing-ring adapted to lit upon the rim of the cup, said cover also having a rentrant groove provided with a packing and adapted to lit the top of the curved plate.
