At the present time considerable inconvenience is experienced in filling cans and emptying the same on account of the air escaping from them when being filled, and not enough entering when the contents are being taken from the same, and to overcome this defect I have invented the following novel arrangement:

IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR OIL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,659, dated August 4, 1874; application filed March 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHARLEs BRANSGROVE, of Lake View, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, section, showing operation of stopper Fig. 3, top View.
My invention relates to cans generally used for oil and sometimes for other purposes. At the present time considerable inconvenience is experienced in filling cans and emptying the same on account of the air escaping from them when being filled, and not enough entering when the contents are being taken from the same, and to overcome this defect I have invented the following novel arrangement:
In the accompanying drawing, A, Fig. 1, represents the can ready for use as I would construct it B, neck of the same, being longer than those in general use, or perhaps it would not be necessary in all cases to make it as long. The neck is provided upon one side with the spout O and upon the opposite side with a hole, a, the same having a lip, 12, soldered or secured around it and extending upsay, oneinchabove the upper edge of the hole a, in such a manner that when oil is poured into the same it will run through the hole into the can, the spout O acting as a vent for the air to escape when the can is being filled, and the hole a acting in the same capacity when the contents are being poured out. In order to prevent the contents of the can from being spilled in case it should be turned over, the same is provided with the stopper 0, which is attached to the wire 0. When the can is not in use the handle is pressed down, and by this means the stopper 0 is forced down far enough to close the spout O, and at the same time closes the vent a, as represented in Fig. 2. When the contents are to be taken from the can, or a part of them, the handle D is drawn up, as represented by dotted lines, and in this manner the stopper is removed from the entrance of the spout, and at the same time opens the hole or vent a.

- The combination, in an oil-can, of the neck B, lip b, vent a, spout O, stopper G, and handle 0, all constructed and arranged to operate as specified and described.
